CAMBRIDGE, United Kingdom, May 2, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Cambridge Display Technology (CDT) (Nasdaq:OLED) today announced that its licensee, MicroEmissive Displays (MED), has completed construction of its volume manufacturing facility for P-OLED based microdisplays in Dresden and that the company will begin initial production of its new P-OLED based plug-and-play 24-bit wearable color headset display, codenamed "Telford" in July. In February, MED showcased a working prototype of the product using a Qualcomm MDDI interface at the 3GSM 2007 Conference.

The new MED facility is expected to begin volume shipping of the Telford displays in July 2007. Total capacity of the new facility is 10 million units annually.

"We're excited to see one of our long-time licensees, MED, move forward to high volume commercial production with their excellent low-power consumption Telford display product," said David Fyfe, chief executive officer of CDT. "With a reported $10.5 million in backorders for this product alone and strong design-in activity from key consumer electronics companies, it is clear that the market potential for P-OLED displays -- which offer a superior viewing experience with significantly lower power consumption than comparable LCD displays -- is significant and growing."

That's fantastic news!

I have just bought an initial 10k at 45p on the grounds that the replacement chairman is one hell of a good appointment to bring the company through to profitability.

I think the comissioning / production process is really the only question - if they don't get it right this time then I guess we're sunk. My holding in MED is not a huge %age of my portfolio, but it's enough to keep me interested, I still view it as a high risk investment that might all end in tears.

Regarding the IND meeting next week, I do intend to go although the details haven't been confirmed yet - I'll probably post over on TMF after the meeting.

Yes it is in Edinburgh, and I will take and post notes, and am happy to ask questions on behalf of others on this thread. My primary interest is how the commissioning process is going, so it was good to see your update.

Will look forward to read your thoughts on meeting with Indigo next week, you are going?

I live about half a mile from the HQ of MED so it isn't exactly a hardship to stop by.

NaeClue - where is the AGM, is it in Edingburgh?

If so, then I won't be going. I would be very interested if you have time to write-up the highlights and post here though.

Still on course then, I think it was always stated as the second half for volume production.

I think the AGM is May 20th by the way, I'll be going, anyone else planning on attending?

Article in Electronics Weekly:

Asked when it was hoped that volume production would begin, Walker replied: "In the second half of 2007."

Asked if the plant would be generating revenue this year, Walker replied: "We expect to be generating revenues in the second half of the year."

MED has got sales contracts for £5m worth of product. Part of that is a £2m sales deal with Cytech Technology of Singapore which makes equipment for home security and automation.

Asked if the yield figures, which will be all-important to profitable manufacturing, are looking OK, Walker replied: "The indications from Dresden are that we will meet our expectations in terms of yield."

Hi All,

All the rural West China/Former East Tibet western style flat-roof concrete buildings have solar panels installed next to the water tanks. Total costs about 2,000Yuan RMB with a 5 yrs guarantee.

Lots of yak meat for my diet plus homegrown or pick-from-wild vegetables.

Right now staying at Rui-li, Yunnan bordertown with Burma. Great Burmese curries!

MED is indeed extremely high tech. Thanks for above info.

Silicon Saxony Day, Dresden, 17th April 2007

Dr Georg Bodammer will be presenting on behalf on MicroEmissive Displays at the Silicon Saxony Day in Dresden on 17th April 2007.

The title of his talk will be: "P-OLED MicroDisplays for Near To Eye Consumer Applications"

Personal displays will be a part of our daily life. We will be able to watch video and TV on the move, use the internet, enjoy gaming, use business software applications without people peering over one's shoulders to glean company secrets. P-OLED microdisplays enable this new world with a highly integrated display engine, vibrant colours and ultra-low power consumption.
Microdisplays are tiny TV screens that are viewed under optical magnification. We describe a new generation of microdisplays that use P-OLED to offer significant benefits compared to incumbent LCD technologies.

All eyes on MED as it prepares to increase volume of tiny TVs
JIM STANTON
BUSINESS EDITOR (jstanton@edinburghnews.com)
MICROEMISSIVE Displays (MED), the Edinburgh-based technology company, said it had secured the final tranche of funding necessary to launch its volume manufacturing operation later this year.

The company, a 1999 spinout from Napier and Edinburgh universities, said it successfully secured a loan facility of up to £3.5 million, although the company had only drawn £1m of the loan from Noble Venture Finance so far.

MED said the funds would go towards general working capital as the company builds its production towards the volume manufacturing of its tiny eyescreen microdisplays, which are aimed initially at installation in headsets for the leisure market and other electronic viewfinders which are expected to drive mobile television.

Bill Miller, the group's chief executive, said: "It is the board's belief that this financing, alongside existing arrangements, will provide the necessary funding to execute its strategy of achieving volume production at the company's manufacturing facility in Dresden, Germany."

The company, which posted enlarged losses of £6.26m over its latest financial year on turnover of just £31,175, sees the launch of large-scale manufacture and shipping from its £6m Dresden factory as the springboard to boosting revenues and a hopeful move into profitability sometime in 2008.

Over the past six months, MED has secured contracts worth around £5m in the Far East, including a £2m deal with an unnamed manufacturer and another deal with Cytech Technology, which will provide a distribution facility for MED in China.

According to research group Informa's "Mobile Video and TV Content Strategies", by 2010, the global mobile TV and video content market is expected to be worth almost £4.8 billion as eyescreen-style technology increasingly appears in portable gadgets including MP4s and video iPods.

Mr Miller said: "This loan facility also gives the management the flexibility and funds it requires. Work at our manufacturing facility is progressing well, our order book is strong and with the funding now secured, the board is confident that MED is well placed."

Under the terms of the deal, MED will be able to draw on the loan facility subject to MED meeting pre-agreed performance criteria.

As well as paying interest to Noble, the group will also receive warrants according to how much MED borrows. If the full amount is borrowed and all the warrants are exercised, Nobel could ultimately hold around 5.3 per cent of MED's shares.

Graeme Walker, MED's chief financial officer, said: "This loan facility is a key aspect of securing the funding necessary to achieve our goals.

"In the last 12 months, we have successfully completed a £5m placing, received the first tranche of the grant aid and, with this last segment of our financing in place, are well positioned to begin volume manufacturing and shipment of our product."

TCM: Off-Topic:

I'm now visiting China almost every four months. Only interested in the unpolluted New West China which are Former East Tibet in Amdo (Qinghai), West Sichuan and West Yunnan (Former Tibetan Kham).

Calling in at Tibetan Shang-ri-la (Tzung-Dian). It's snowing here interspersed with heavy rain. I'm in an Internet Cafe waiting for the weather to clear for my expedition to thw World Heritage site of the Three Rivers Running Parallel Region. (Near sources of the Rivers Mekong, Salween and Qin Sha (Chang-Jiang). A bit of a problem with mud-slide along the mountain roads. There are plenty to do here with visiting Tibetan Monasteries and getting to know the Bai Ethnic people. Just finished a trip to Ji-Zu Shan, west of Da-li. Very beautiful. I stayed with a farming Bai family. Everything we eat, they grow or pick from wild.

I like this lifestyle very much. With Internet availability here, I need not stay in UK for more than 4 months a year. BTW, I can get you from Gatwick to HK from Sterling 75 to 99pounds one way. From there you get to Shenzhen for HK$100. Once in China the flights everywhere are frequent and cheaper than chips.

We must talk more on China as we can share a lot of info.

Cheers and regards,

I think that has to be viewed as good news - money must be tight now and this is such a critical stage of the company's development, lets hope this is enough to see them through to successful production and cash generation in the not too distant future.

Greetings PP.
What takes you to Yunnan? - I'm a regular visitor to China, but I never have cause to venture over to Yunnan, I thought that Tobacco was pretty much the only industry there?

With MED, I think a little patience is called for - news shouldn't be too much longer, certainly I would hope to hear something in the next six weeks or so, then we will know whether to remortgage the farm, or beat a hasty retreat for the exit.

Cheers.
