Gym - You have to hold the shares at the close the evening before the XD. You can sell them anytime after the open on the XD date and you are entitled to receive the dividend.

HSBC is due to kick things off today, bringing an end to a mixed banking season, with an expected 8.3% increase in annual profit, helped by continued strong growth in emerging markets.

The banking giant is expected to report pretax profit before goodwill of $20.5bn for 2005 under IFRS accounting rules, up from a restated $18.943bn the previous year, according to analysts.

doesn't matter what the figures are...300% up on last would be absolutely no good unless they are well above analysts expectations... The chart is telling me up but not to be toyed with on results day .. unless feeling very brave..;-)
so.. do you feel lucky??

After a lot of analysis today, I'm now thinking that we may even see a final dividend of 22p tomorrow. If we do, then we should see a good rise in the share price.

I've modified the Gann/Fib chart to include some projections.

As already indicated the current Fib target is 1001p, being 161.8% of the fall from 970p to the recent bottom of 921p.

The next target is 1039p, being 161.8% of the rise from 921p to the recent top of 994p.

All updates are now complete. We finished at about the Gann support line, so no harm done and now it is just a case of wait for the results on Monday.

A final dividend of more than 18p will make me very happy.

The weekly analysis gives a target of 1024p, which I think is over optimiustic at the moment and I'll be looking to sell my holding before the XD if I can get 1013p or better.

Having only just bought into this share myself I haven't really done any estimates, but from a cursory glance at the figures as far as I can see the final is likely to be about 18 - 18.3p (41.46 - 41.76p for the year). It's always difficult with this share, because dividends are declared in US$ and converted to Sterling.

At least we are still hanging on to the Gann support line, which can't be bad.

In Hong Kong, the HSI closed 80points lower as investors turned cautious ahead of results from HSBC on Monday.

"Everybody expects HSBC to report growth in earnings, but whether it is a single- or double-digit increase is something that is keenly awaited. This explains the cautious trade of many investors today," said Kitty Chan, director at Rexcapital Asset Management.

HSBC shares weakened 0.6% in Hong Kong trade. Standard Chartered Bank gained 3.9%.

The company is tipped to post Monday a net profit of HK$112 billion (US$14.4 billion; euro12.13 billion), up 21 percent on-year, according to a poll of 17 analysts by Thomson Financial.

HSBC May Disappoint - Morgan Stanley

Friday, March 03, 2006 1:16:03 AM ET
Dow Jones Newswires

1253 [Dow Jones] STOCK CALL: Morgan Stanley expects lackluster performance from HSBC's (0005.HK) three key markets: US, UK, HK; says 2H05 earnings likely will be soft. "Our estimates are about 3% below consensus for 2005 and we expect 2H05 will carry lackluster trends from its three key markets... as margins compress, credit costs rise, and the seasonal impact on operating expenses." Rates stock underweight, targets HK$123; shares off 0.2% at HK$132.70. (KEG)

I'll see if I can find anything else today

In spite of HSBC being the only bank down this morning, the Gann support line (974p tonight) seems to be holding well at the moment.
