08/12/2024 14:44 | Still no mention of the budget amendment. They've postponed the General Amnesty Law, Election Law and Property Restitution Law until the next legislative session but no mention of the budget law. The current session ends tomorrow so there's still time, in theory. But Maliki's the problem, he's trying to undermine Sudani and his plans and couldn't care less about the impact on Iraq. | habshan
08/12/2024 14:39 | Malakis crowd? Iraqi parliament postpones today’s session amid Coordination Framework boycott Iraq Parliament Iraqi Parliament Coordination Framework Iraqi parliament postpones today’s session amid Coordination Framework boycott 2024-12-08 13:58 Font Shafaq News/ On Sunday, the Iraqi parliament postponed its session due to a lack of the legal quorum required for proceedings, according to a brief statement from the parliamentary media office. A source informed Shafaq News that the Coordination Framework leadership had directed its members to boycott the session, aiming to block a vote on the contentious General Amnesty Law. Meanwhile, controversy continues to surround divisive laws such as the General Amnesty Law. The State of Law Coalition (SLC) has ruled out discussions on such legislation during Sunday’s session. Earlier, a member of the SLC, Firas Al-Muslmawi, told Shafaq News that the absence of political consensus is likely to push these deliberations to the next legislative term. | beernut1

08/12/2024 13:19 | Maddeningly it doesn't say which laws? hxxps://www.shafaq.c The State of Law Coalition ruled out that the Iraqi Parliament would discuss, in its session today, Sunday, the "controversial" laws, most notably the "general amnesty." The representative of the coalition bloc, Firas Al-Maslamawi, told Shafak News Agency that "the laws included on the agenda are controversial, especially the general amnesty law, which includes legal articles that are subject to reservations and rejection by some political blocs." He added that "the absence of political consensus will lead to these laws being postponed to the next legislative session." Al-Maslamawi pointed out that "today's session may leave the scheduled agenda and turn to discussing the latest developments in Syria and their effects on the Iraqi situation, as the parliament may issue an official position on this issue." He stressed that the sudden events taking place in Syria require a discussion within the House of Representatives to examine their potential repercussions on Iraq, especially since the two countries are linked by common security and political dimensions. For his part, a parliamentary source told Shafaq News Agency that the Speaker of Parliament, Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani, and the heads of the political blocs held a meeting in the office of the State Forces Alliance regarding holding today's session, approving the laws, and discussing the events in Syria and their repercussions on Iraq. This morning, Sunday, December 8, 2024, the Syrian opposition factions entered the capital, Damascus, and broadcast Statement No. (1) on state television, thus announcing the end of the “dark era” of the Assad regime and the beginning of a new era for Syria. In the first official communication between Iraq and the Syrian opposition, Iraqi security forces on the Syrian border issued severe warnings to armed opposition elements, asking them not to approach the border strip. The Iraqi forces confirmed that the area near the border is considered a "killing zone" for anyone who enters it | confused _gerbill

08/12/2024 11:00 | The above tweet from Jon Dowling is dated yesterday and contains a video clarifying that that they did not mean to imply the law has been approved but is ready to go to the Gazette "ONCE APPROVED", So we wait. EDIT - I've just watched it again and it's still confusing, it says (yesterday) that the law has already been passed but has not yet been sent to the Gazette for publication but that it will be today or tomorrow or whenever. Let's see. | habshan

08/12/2024 10:37 | Thanks RED - "Iraq’s HCL Oil & Gas law ITS READY TO GO TO THE GAZETTE..." Legislation only goes into the Gazette once it's been approved by Parliament. The statement "it's ready to go" would seem to imply that it's been approved. "The Official Gazette of Iraq has been the official source for the laws and resolutions passed by the Council of Representatives of Iraq since August 1922. Article 125 of the Constitution mandates that laws shall be published in the gazette and shall take effect on the date of their publication, unless stipulated otherwise. It is published by the Ministry of Justice." | habshan

(Photo: AFP) World Vasily Nebenzya UN Security Council Erbil-Baghdad relations The Russian Federation Dec. 7, 2024 ERBIL (Kurdistan24) – Russia's UN ambassador Vasily Nebenzya expressed great appreciation for Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed al-Sudani's cabinet's steps toward stabilizing domestic political conditions and improving the efficiency of government institutions at both provincial and local levels. He cited the successful parliamentary elections held on Oct. 20, 2024, in the “Kurdistan Region and the election of the new Speaker of Parliament as evidence of this progress.” The Russian representative stated that they hope all Iraqi political forces will work to resolve differences through dialogue, taking into account the interests of all components and residents. Nebenzya reaffirmed his country's support for Erbil and Baghdad, saying, "Our support remains constant and unwavering for advancing dialogue between Erbil and Baghdad on all remaining disputed and unresolved issues." Russia's UN Representative also noted, "We want to point out the positive trend in strengthening security and counter-terrorism efforts. We are confident that Iraq's security institutions can resolve these issues." Nebenzya further emphasized that the implementation of agreements regarding the phased withdrawal of the International Coalition against ISIS led by the US from Iraq should be carried out on schedule. He added that delays in this process and the presence of foreign forces on Iraqi soil “is not only a destabilizing factor for Iraq but also has an increasingly negative impact on the regional situation.” He stated, "We observe the UN's various efforts in Iraq, including the activities of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI). Over the past 20 years, it has dedicated its full capacity to restoring and strengthening the Iraqi state, including through normalizing social and political life and organizing electoral processes. Now, Iraqis are ready to take responsibility for their country's political future." These statements were made by Vasily Nebenzya during his country's address at the United Nations meeting on Friday, Dec. 6, 2024. | beernut1
