There are people queuing up for their jobs.
Unfortunately some people will die, but look on the bright side.
39,000 * £80/day = £2,496,000 saving per day
(we pay the army any way)
so £2.5m /day saving to the country.

If they take the year off thats over £0.5 bn
(nearly as much as Gordon lost us on gold sales :( )

The other benefit is that old people will die and the govt saves on pensions too - a bit morbid and callous I know, but hey I'm just the messenger.

i think it would be a nice gesture to take the money saved on firemens wages during the strike, and give it to the forces that are doing their utmost to look after us all. After all, it is them that deserve a reward.

If its down to how much, and how many will queue up for the job...how about putting all public service jobs up for auction?

How much do you think fatty 2 jags job would fetch?....millions of £££ imo.

Also think about your own job, how much would someone pay to toss you on the dole?? Think about it!

Forget France Louise, totally different country with totally different costs.

Seems to me that the current Fireman's plight can't be that bad when there are 38 applicants for each Fireman's job.

If individual Fireman think their lot is so bad, and that they are worth much more than they are currently earning, then let them resign and get another job. They'll soon find out that life out in the "real" world of work outside the public sector doesn't include 4 days off for every 4 days worked and that non-public-sector staff are never knowingly paid to enjoy a nice sleep at home, and that in the "real" world of work you are never knowingly paid to play pool and work-out in the gym.

And, if those poor ill-treated Firemen still think they are so hard done by, then let them work in France where their basic salary is under £15,000 a year, and where they will be expected to perform a paramedic role as well as fight fires.

Who says firemen are not wealth creaters!
They are making loads of money in thier 2nd jobs as far as I can see.
The poor reserves are who I feel sorry for - they have often worked as fire reserves for years in the hope of getting into full time fireshirker job heaven and retire at 55 with the life of a millionare. They strike me as decent sorts - not like the 'professional' firemen who have lost all my respect.

Just for starters,
Whitie there are 650 mps. Most have academic qualifications and can be voted out at least every 5 years, often shorter,. Many give up careers to enter politics. Tony Blair for instance would probably make as much as a lawyer. I would agree though that large numbers of them are not worth it though. Are you an anarchist? and would like a democracy with no government. Can't be done.
The fireshirkers have to know their role in society and their relative value in a country who's wealth is dependent on wealth creators. Oilmen, builders, farmers, steelmen, etc .

Our wonderful fireshirkers have declared themselves Heros, well maybe some of them are but it would be nice if they allowed others to decide. They have declared themselves worth it, well again, it will be others who will decide. The demanding, pround, arrogant attitude is not in the spirit of public service.
You can't serve the public when you decide to put their lives at risk by being prepared to strike. Because of this I think they are doomed to be privatised. If you can't serve the public with a good heart they should be managed and manipulated into it for the ultimate benefit of all.
I believe in public service but they have proved they don't understand what that means.

Boon,
thank you for your concerns regarding my mobility,I can assure you that a wheelchair ramp will not be needed-Im extremely able bodied(a veritable super man for a man of my years).
I have to admit to feeling a little sorry for you;you honestly believed that you were going to be the recipient of (guffaw,guffaw-wait for it.32 thousend pounds)...youll be telling me that you believe in santa claus and the tooth fairy next!
Big John has floored young Gilchrist yet again, hes had him bouncing off the ropes for a fortnight, yorkshire grit---Gilchrist never stood a chance,Ive heard that the para medics are on constant stand by..along with a team of psychiatric nurses - ready to whisk him into care when it all gets too much for him.
...I wouldnt worry too much about Labour needing your vote, the assylum seekers and the ethnic minorities will easily make those numbers up...Tony has all sussed.
Its all very well having your wife and family driving past the fire station tooting their horns constantly...I was watching Sky earlier and the same mondeo went past three times hooting, you cant pull the wool over the publics eyes!
Now then,- about those warm scarves and tinned foodstuffs, where shall I bring them.I have nothing to do this weekend so I can call down to see you lads...perhaps I can make you see the error of your ways.
Ive an abundance of pallets in the yard,I can bring some of those down too - for your braizier(and some chesnuts eh....very festive)!
..your old friend,Jack Levi.

Should have kept your heads down boys, things will never be the same again.
Basically your,e greed has been exposed.
Those baseball caps look really smart and professional ,by the way, well worth
30k ,not.

Braindamp,
It's always affordable, its just relative to how much you want it, and how far you're willing to travel.

Give them the same as the Pensioners 1.9%.

I am in favour of the firemen and thier millionare status (£300,000 pension retire at 55 and 2nd Career) paid for by the British people.

If we get the 16% - which I think may happen with watered down changes (Crucial as to how Gilchrist will play this strike - he needs other union's to argue for parity IMO) imagine what this would do to the housing market! BANG CRASH...
as interest rates are raised and unemployment is raised - Housing may just become affordable in this country.

So as far as I am concerned I hope the firemen get at least 16%.

All,
How does it feel to have your lives used as a bargaining chip on the alter of Gilchrist's inflated ego?. Me, I'm a tad angry about it. The firemen better get wise soon or Gilchrist will make them a victim of his ego also. 40%/16% is just plain nonsense and he's got them believing it. If I see any squaddies out there doing the fireshirkers job I'll let them know I appreciate it.

Boneyhead,
Tony is back now...and Big John is sat in his luxurious office quaffing champange and munching pheasent.....he has no plans for going up the road!
The troops are driving the red engines....I saw two earlier this morning outside Fortnum-Masons picking up Christmas hampers for the squaddies.
