I would love to lounge around, play cards and pool, drink tea and retire at 45 for £21000 a year.

Then what would be wrong with privitising the service the same way other local authority services have been privatised?

I can see no way a decent fireman will get the salary he deserves when so much deadwood and utterly arcane working practices are being carried by the current system. Derek Hatton started out as a fireman didn't he? It seems to me the FBU is full of millitant bully boys leading you up the garden path.

It will only be a 'proper' profession with a professionals pay, when the working practices should change to that of a profession.

Sparky,
I admire you for keeping this charade up.
The muppets seen on the news last night , chanting in baseball ,caps did you
no favours, though.
The Fire Brigade is the most inefficient pseudo-hybrid organisation on the
planet and how it has got away with it for so long is a mystery.
Please accept responsibility and change ,improve your workshy culture, adopt
a more professional conduct and you might get somewhere.
BTW its really tough on the outside as you have to produce the goods.
Satisfying and rewarding though.

They should look at they way it is managed before hammering the blokes who actually do the work.Local government is with out a clue.Mismanagement is the cause of all the problems.

The bain report is toilet paper. It looks at all the wrong areas. There is a considerable amount of money to be saved, but this is not in the area of fire cover but how it is run.eg chief fire officers getting 30K jaguars to drive around in.The other areas are maintenance, and administration(HUGE AMOUNT) and fire safety.

They are not ropes, they are reasonable well constructed ideas to drag the
Brigade kicking and screaming into the 21st century.
The FBU,s dinosaur attitude is really getting joe publics back up.
I should know as i,m not in my cushy station anymore.
Mr Gilchrist comes across as a moron, way out of his depth.
Privatisation begins here and its self inflicted.

Sparky, as a supporter of the FBU I think that you need to consider the reforms. A deal that adds to the service will be very platable to jo public and may get you a better pay offer. I realise the negotiators must stand firm on their stance, but greater professionalism would do the staff a big favour in their career prospects. And good luck! Ignore the reforms at your peril.
