20/11/2002 23:27 | UPDATE: A 16% pay rise for firefighters will finally be offered to union officials during strike talks on Thursday, the BBC has learned. The two-year offer was still being thrashed out on Wednesday evening and will be conditional on a commitment by the Fire Brigades Union to "meaningful discussions for change". BBC business correspondent Paul Mason told BBC Two's Newsnight the new offer - a significant increase on the previous figure of 11% over two years - would mean every qualified firefighter would be earning £25,000 by November 2003. Sir George suggested changes to the "four-on, four-off" shift system for firefighters, an end to the overtime ban and extra duties, all changes bitterly opposed by union officials. "This is wanting quite a considerable amount from the union, I would understand, but they are getting a fair measure of reward for what they would be prepared to discuss and sign up for." | bristolbaz
20/11/2002 23:10 | I can tell you now it will NOT even be considered. 1. 16% isn't enough (it already includes this years 4% which we should have anyway.Pay rises work a year behind 4% is for last year!!!!!!) 2. Too many strings attached Out Friday again!!! | sparky999

20/11/2002 13:16 | "The Chief of Defence Staff says he is extremely concerned that the planned eight-day firefighters` strike could overstretch troops and damage morale. He also warned troops should not cross picket lines to use modern fire engines. Defence secretary Geoff Hoon has made it clear that any decision to cross picket lines would be left to police." I notice that firefighters in Paris are trained paramedics and are paid less. | bourdon
20/11/2002 12:50 | lol, plenty of people paint their own houses, so what makes you think they won't climb up to the first floor. They do it on dodgy diy ladders from b&q too, not those nice safe wide firemans ladders, which they can't afford. (Yes even maximus does his own first floor paintin, under the gutters too.) | maximus verendus

20/11/2002 12:26 | Bradwell, FYI, (as I have no wish to engage in pointless converstation with you,) When I worked, yes I was paid more, and sometimes an awful lot more, far more than you can imagine. But I worked for 90-100 hours per week for it, trained for 5 years on a lower basic for it, and eventually had to retire early, I never spent one minute watching tv or playing pool during working hours, was never thanked by the ungratefull sods that I'd helped, and usually got nothing but criticism from our gormeless thatcherized management. If I were you I'd be happy with what you've got, greed is a nasty thing. | maximus verendus
20/11/2002 12:02 | I see maximus and of course you do such good work for the comunity that you are woth more???? | bradwell
20/11/2002 01:22 | Maximus I doubt that you even get past the cellar??????????? | bradwell
19/11/2002 23:52 | They've lied about their wages, hourly pay rate, the hours, and the actual 'real' work they carry out whilst on duty. They've even tried comparing themselves to the NYFB and their payscales, and to 9/11, a rather silly comparison, all to no avail, and the NYFB of course cannot strike, along with many other foreign FBs. They seek public sympathy claiming they have to do 2 or 3 jobs, how pathetic and out of touch these people are, well if that proves anything it proves they don't do very much in the fireservice if they've got enough energy left for 1 or 2 more jobs, the word greed springs to mind. If ever a Union was trying it on it's this lot, don't give them a penny extra. In fact Pay them Italian or French wages, they'll still get recruits, in fact you might get genuinely vocational firemen, rather than people who consider themselves money making machines, with a cushy prime occupation to fall back on. | maximus verendus
19/11/2002 23:27 | Its gone quiet ! Hehehehe | gypsy king
18/11/2002 12:07 | Gypsy It's prescott whos begging to get them to accept 16% not anyone else, this needn't of even happened if the Gov hadn't stepped in!! I can assure you they will continue striking unless there is a satisfactory offer on the table, and 16% may do it!!! | bradwell |
