I am sure the key players in dtg are very focussed on margin and roce!
They are only too well aware of the maxim that growth is for vanity, profit is for sanity.
They will be fine tuning pricing almost by the minute to optimise profitable bookings.
But not losing sight of course of their leading edge customer service.
Great set of results, and clearly no one there feeling the job is done. Great team, great leadership

Tui I think is a fair way ahead.. So take a while to catch them.. Also probably need to take on other markets with a little more range.. I still think in the next year or so once this consolidation period is coming to an end.. The next big expansion will take place..

Meeson usually under promises and over delivers. Based on what they have said today, a cautious forward view, I would expect the next trading update in autumn to be fairly upbeat.

Tong
I for one was never expecting a huge leg up today. It’s about market share and the post brexit world.
Is brexit mentioned in there???
Huge cash pile over 1 b and 100 aircraft now.
I expect similar profit in current year and a 15% increase in holidays to 3.5 m
What’s TUI share in the Uk?

I totally agree. I always enjoy reading CEO statements devoid of margin talk and ROE. Businesses like these know if you take care of the customers, the financial metrics follow. Too many managers are focussed on these.

A very fair point from Tong.. Regarding commentary going forward.. Its not always possible to keep smashing market expectations.. But to get through this year with another 100 to 150mill on the balance sheet will do me.. Today we lack the big pop or drop.. My bets are on a gradual accumulation and a slow climb up to the 950 to 10 mark..

Good progress in a difficult environment.. Just munching up market share as the squeeze continues. Just waiting for TCG to pop.. This business is doing what all good businesses do in hard times. Grinding out growth at the expense of those distressed competitors.. Staying lean, looking after valuable staff and dropping gp % if required to take market share.. Still remains a great medium long investment..

Decent overall picture. Caveat: what normally gives prices a huge leg up is "exceeding" market expectations NOT "remaining optimistic that such expectations will be met". Let's see what Mr Market will make of it shortly. Only his judgment matters not ours.

Indeed, more optimistic than last time’s caution:

Quote:
“Outlook

Though overall demand for our leisure travel products has continued to strengthen since the start of the new financial year, it is clear from our forward booking trends that generally, less confident consumers are booking later than last year and therefore pricing for both our flight-only and package holiday products has to be continually enticing. Nevertheless, with still some way to go in the booking cycle, the Board remains optimistic that current market expectations for Group profit before foreign exchange revaluations and taxation for the year ending 31 March 2020 will be met.

Looking further ahead, the Travel Industry in general is facing cost pressures in relation to fuel, carbon and other operating charges which, together with the necessary continued investment in our own products and operations, including that required to attract and retain colleagues, are headwinds that the business faces. However, in the long term we are confident of the resilience of both our Leisure Travel and Distribution & Logistics businesses.”

Edit: and advanced takings strong:
“At the reporting date, the Group had received payments in advance of travel from its Leisure Travel customers amounting to £905.9m (2018: £777.9m), had no cash restricted by its merchant acquirers and had no cash placed with counterparties in the form of margin calls to cover out-of-the-money hedge instruments (2018: £nil). The Group continues to comfortably exceed the UK Civil Aviation Authority's 'liquidity threshold test'.”

Much better outlook than I expected.
Remember forecast is less this year but has to put a floor under price.
Well done team Jet2

Thomas cook in a mess. But wider market not great. Bookings soft and margins squeezed and a few operational headaches is what I think dtg will say tomorrow.Jet2 maybe better placed than TC and Tui to weather it though so thats a plus.

This is related to this article earlier in the week, which you'll need Google translate for if you don't speak Spanish:

Alarma: los bancos devuelven pagarés de Thomas Cook

In plain English, the Spanish banks are refusing to factor Thomas Cook payments. This is putting huge working capital pressure on the Balearic tourism industry.

Jet2 about to make out like banditos!
