Goodish news on commodity prices below. Of course it doesn't affect shipping availability, which is the other side of that particular story.

China grew around 10% in the last quarter, so I can't see demand slipping. CKN should do OK; BTW 70p earnings sounds a bit low, but still only puts CKN on a PE of just above 12 with excellent dividend. If that is the downside, this feels pretty safe.

BEIJING (AFX) - China's enterprise commodity price index, which measures wholesale prices, rose 0.8 pct year-on-year in March and 0.1 pct from the previous month, the People's Bank of China (PBoC) said on its website.
It said crude oil prices jumped 42.6 pct year-on-year in March and were up two pct from the previous month. Refined oil prices rose 24.1 pct in March from a year earlier and edged up 2.6 pct from the previous month.

In March, the price of coal rose 0.8 pct year-on-year and was down 0.2 pct from the last month.

The bank said grain prices were down 2.1 pct year-on-year and dropped 0.5 pct over the previous month. Textile prices increase 2.5 pct year-on-year and 0.3 pct from February.

Steel prices dropped 17.7 pct year-on-year in March, but were up 2.5 pct from a month earlier. Prices of nonferrous metals jumped 22 pct year-on-year and 1.3 pct from February.

After speaking to the company i have found out that evolution are no longer clarksons analyst. Panmure gordon have taken their position.
After speaking to Panmure i am now clear that the forcasts as stated by OXMAN above are of the right order.
i sold this morning.

The extract below from Final results outlook statement doesn't sit well with the above quotes from evolution. I simply do not believe they are even remotely accurate. Note the wording "increased returns" which to me means above the 109 eps achieved for 2005

New broking activities and the development of shipping service activities such as fund management, financial services and property services will broaden our base and give greater consistency to earnings.

"Your company is well placed to produce another excellent result in 2006 and to continue to generate increased returns to its shareholders."

Not sure if my post arrived (new to the board), so I will post again....apologies if this is a repeat.

CKN: continued its growth story despite the doom mongers who were predicting a slump due to the fall in the shipping freight index. China/India/world economies are still doing well and forecast to continue to do well so personally I think this concern is over done. MOre importantly the latest set of results go along way IMO to proving that CKN are diversifying themselves away from this cyclical risk. The company is significantly cash generative and at the year end had a chunky cash pile. Yes it has paid bonuses since year end, but it has also paid a large chunk of its plowright acquisition as well which will hopefully boost profits in the future.

Broker forecasts IMO look too pesimistic and are from what I can see out of date anyway, so does anyone have a view on the latest broker forecasts please?

So in summary:

1 growth stock that has continually delivered
2 cash generative and good yield well covered
3 management appear sound and diversifying risk away
4 macro situation appears sound
5 latest results talked of continued growth so I believe the out of date broker forecasts I have seen via Barclays sotckbrokers site are way out of date
6 CKN is under-rated/valued compared to its peers FSJ or Braemar S.

Look forward to hearing some views from my first post!!
cheers

No mention here about the rise in the share price after full year profits. I have been waiting to buy these for quite some time after selling and watching - too long as it turns out as the cash arrived too late, perhaps tomorrow as there might just be a little slippage.

Weird - current spread 885-902.5, yet I've just been offered 900 on a dummy sell. Guess other trades at this price also sells, so why no change in quoted prices? Didn't realise this could happen with sets. Anyway, I suppose the recent buyer is still looking for more shares?

Just for those who don't have L2. Total volume at present shows 48,446 shares have gone through this morning and, judging by the pattern of trades that comprise that figure, my computer-programmed-buyer is still going strong.

Some decent upgrades coming here imo - I bet the year ahead is going to see 115p eps, that would mean a 30% upgrade to the current forecast.

Broker forecasts always lag here until they get guidance - looking for lots more next week

It may be relevant to add that the mysterious buyer from yesterday didn't appear until later in the day and these things tend to repeat, so it could be a quiet morning. But the results could make the IC plus the weekend press, so I'm still quietly hopeful.

And it's likely to get better tomorrow. I was watching Level 2 and at 16:22 somebody slapped on an order for 6,300 shares at £8.60. This person has been buying, in roughly 1000 share quantities throughout the day. They clearly want another 6,300, which is great for us 'little' people! It looks like a genuine bid from what I can see as the order wasn't pulled during the auction.
