16/12/2006 18:44 | Takeover talk premature claim Magpies December 15, 2006 11:58 Newcastle United were today reported to be on their way to becoming the latest English Premiership club to be taken over by foreign investors. The Premiership strugglers later issued a statement to play down a report in The Daily Mail, which claimed the club had been targeted by American financiers Polygon and the United Bank of Switzerland. According to the report, the club's board have unanimously accepted a joint bid of £227m sterling. It said the deal was going through a period of 'due diligence' with the takeover expected to be completed earlier in the new year. The report added that the club's current owners, the Hall family and chairman Freddy Shepherd, will collect £68m in the deal while manager Glenn Roeder will be given a £20m transfer kitty. A statement on the club's website later played down the report but seemed to suggest that talks had recently been held. Manchester United, West Ham, Chelsea and Aston Villa are all in the hands of foreign investors, while Liverpool are close to being taken over. Dubai International Capital, the investment arm of Dubai's billionaire ruler Sheikh Mohammed, is set to make a formal offer for the Merseyside club in the coming weeks. | lbo
15/12/2006 19:29 | Ancelotti wary of Celtic threat Article by stvsport AC Milan coach Carlo Ancelotti admits his side are in for a rough ride when they play Celtic in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League. The Serie A side, who have won the competition six times, will travel to Celtic Park on 21/22 February for the first leg of the knock-out tie before hosting Gordon Strachan's side at the San Siro on 6/7 March. "Celtic are a very good side," said Ancelotti. "They beat Manchester United and they are a team to fear. "Considering the atmosphere that we will face in Glasgow, it will be an advantage to play the decider at the San Siro," he said. Milan have had an inconsistent season in Serie A and are 15th position in the table after being deducted points at the start of the season following a match fixing scandal. The Rossoneri have also experienced injury problems but goalkeeper Nelson Dida and defender Alessandro Nesta should be fit in time for the clash against Celtic. Ancelotti added: "For us, this break before the knock-out round will be crucial. "We will see a different Milan on February. We will recover our top players and for us this break before the knock-out round is crucial." | lbo
