Burford still a good bet despite problems, says Jefferies

Burford Capital (BURF) has come under pressure from a short selling attack but Jefferies says the litigation financier is still the long-term leader in an underpenetrated market.

Analyst Julian Roberts retained his ‘buy’ recommendation and target price of £24 on the shares, which fell 1.5% to 800.5p yesterday.

The shares have tumbled from over £14 at the beginning of this month after US activist Muddy Waters took a short position in the group.

‘Burford is still the long-term leader in a large, underpenetrated market offering attractive, uncorrelated returns,’ he said.

‘We think the company reports returns statistics accurately and have no concerns about its liquidity.’

Roberts said governance changes announced by the firm, including a reshuffle of management, were ‘overdue but welcome, and more can be done on the disclosure front to help rebuild confidence’.

‘Burford’;s cost of capital has risen by the business is unchanged,’ he said.

Bought at 765 and sold at 803 quick profit of £2600 in 20 mins. LOL

That's nothing. I bought at 785, sold at 794 2 minutes later for a cool profit of 23 grand. Also got a £25 M&S voucher from my broker.

If the MERZ case is based on MW report then what a laugh, eh?

So if I've been deliberately misled along with most other investors then can I still sue them for giving me 10 times my investment back despite the share price fall?

Investors have to prove a 'loss' first and also prove they relied on all the technical stuff MW told them rather than just PE's and PAT's, I'd have thought. But I doubt it'll ever go anywhere. BUR clearly make a lot of enemies out of beaten legal firms who inevitably want to try a shakedown as a bit of revenge.

Fact is dg, you don't know what they found. Whatever it was it made them say 'No thanks.'

You wouldn't see any wrongdoing here if it came up & slapped you in the face. You've convinced yourself everything is awesome. Share price says otherwise.

The point is that it doesn't prove any wrongdoing by Burford. Also, someone else may want to buy it. As for what the case was they will find out when they do due diligence.

Maybe, what does that prove?

There's no 'maybe' about it, as you well know.

What it proves is that after examining the books & the co. they didn't want to buy BUR.

Now, mired in controversy with hugely important unanswered accounting questions & more questions to do with governance hanging over it, what chance is there PE would buy this?

Zero, until they clear up the questions & Name That Case!

Can't think why they are so reluctant.

Agree that the shorters are getting desperate here. The tide of opinion is turning against them and so they have to up the ante! They are clearly failing in their task though.....

dgdg,

Now you are lying if it was all properly and credibly explained in BUR's rebuttal then the questions would not be being asked now.

Those questions will continue to be asked until they are answered. Whether that be under caution in an interview with SFO or in a deposition or otherwise.
