don't have real time access to Dow futures Maxidi so guessed as said... but mid 360's seems heavy resistance for now -

EW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Retail sales fell unexpectedly in July after two straight months of gains, the government reported Thursday.

The Commerce Department said total retail sales declined 0.1% last month, compared with June's gain of 0.6%.

Economists surveyed by Briefing.com had been expecting June sales to increase 0.7%.

BJ - I've just got in and haven't heard yet what the stable thinks, but he really does need softer going than he's likely to get. Having said that, I've just put my £5EW on him. He must be good value at 20/1.

Have to agree with xworks on this.

Monty etc showed no signs of any common decency when it came to the longs on this board. Calling us all losers fools etc etc.

They HAVE been proved wrong time and again, but if we have a fall again ... back they come with their rubbish.

diku,
This bulletin board is a meritocracy not a democracy.
If posters cannot "cut the mustard" they should be outed.

When I worked I sometimes had people removed.

xworks...you expressed your opinion gracefully in the first paragraph of post 36122...however it all got washed off in the second paragraph by targeting individual posters...why do have to target individual posters as to how wrong they are!...surely everybody is entitled to post their opinions...be it long or short...some you win some you lose!...

Morning Folks. Have sold 70% of my core holding in Barc and plowed into Miners and Lloyds (once it broke above 73p).. Just as well I do my own research and analysis and didn't listen to many of the numpty's we've had on here since April.....

..... AND.... I'm amazed to see Monty, Ed the business and Madoff still posting! Damn it!... Have you Guys no shame. You've absolurely no credibility here at all. I see Barc today at 355+.. Errrrr ... Not 220p.. DOA! How stupid do you all look!....

Well done all longs who stood by their convictions... Barclays is still a great stock with great upside in the medium term from the fabulous acquisition of Lehmans. Just see greater short term potential elsewhere as we've approached another Fib level.

IMV you have to look at employment, retail sales, industrial production before you can determine the end of a recessionary period.

Recession: The Newspaper Definition
The standard newspaper definition of a recession is a decline in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for two or more consecutive quarters.
This definition is unpopular with most economists for two main reasons. First, this definition does not take into consideration changes in other variables. For example this definition ignores any changes in the unemployment rate or consumer confidence. Second, by using quarterly data this definition makes it difficult to pinpoint when a recession begins or ends. This means that a recession that lasts ten months or less may go undetected.

Recession: The BCDC Definition
The Business Cycle Dating Committee at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) provides a better way to find out if there is a recession is taking place. This committee determines the amount of business activity in the economy by looking at things like employment, industrial production, real income and wholesale-retail sales. They define a recession as the time when business activity has reached its peak and starts to fall until the time when business activity bottoms out. When the business activity starts to rise again it is called an expansionary period. By this definition, the average recession lasts about a year.
