Incredible how investors are unable to think for themselves and rely on auto-trading. There is no reason in hell why BAE should be dragged down by the FTSE today if people actually traded independently and by using their brain. We already know the 'spending review' outcome for BAE and the wider armed forces.

So, in short, NH there is very little substance to your theory. The cash payment of the dividend won't have any negative effect on the current share price. It's actually possible that the share price will go up as some investors may decide to reinvest their dividends (rather than use the dividend reinvestment scheme), hence pushing the price up.

But in reality neither theory holds much credence.

squids, its just a theory I have. Yes, I know it went ex divi in Oct.

NorthernHills ... Good news for you, this is the cash payment of the divi, the shares went ex-divi (where they would fall because of the proposed divi) a good while back.

grahamburn. Working on the theory that the share price will fall by the amount of the divi payment (for a short time). If it does, i will still be in profit! :-)

Well given the choice the price would rocket after reinvestment. Not that many will complain if it happens before!

Surely you'd want price to go down so your reinvested divis buy more.

Northern Hills. Not sure why you link the rise to the dividend payment next Monday - the shares went ex-dividend on 22 October, so no relevance whatsoever.

Much more to do with the rising defence budget.

Considering that this was at 650p pre-lockdown AND pre defence spending review, with a yield of over 4%, this is not really a share to be out of.

What the extra defence spending means and where it will go

This week’s announcement by the Prime Minister of an additional ‘£16.5bn’ for defence spending over the next four-five years is a welcome development for the Ministry of Defence, coming in the wake of financial uncertainty regarding the Chancellor’s delayed autumn spending review, where defence was viewed dimly by number ten.

In the end, the combined political weight of the Prime Minister, the Defence Secretary Ben Wallace, and the former Downing Street special adviser Dominic Cummings was enough to ensure that this financial uplift represents the largest investment into the British armed forces in 30 years, setting the scene for a UK defence strategy in a post-Brexit age..........

Yep, the EU having a master strategy on crossing a main road would be an achievement...

I do like the look of the share price graph today ; does rather make the drop to £4 a month ago look even more bizarre.

Poikka,

There's a fabulous Putin meme doing the rounds in this regard.

Along the lines of "What's that,no British Army, just the Italians..Why am I asking, oh no reason"

Very funny.

"The European Union aims to draw up a master military strategy document to define future threats, goals and ambitions in defence..."

The whole idea of that coming to fruition, not to mention the new defence force being able to make decisions and take action, is challenging my imagination, severely.
