Nice finish to the day, possibly on track to finish the year on £5+

Thanks for that, I am less impressed now that I see it is guided. And costs $60k a shell!
Presumably it can only steer using fin adjustments , no direct thrust, so must have to be pointed pretty close to the target trajectory. Must be some robust servos to survive the acceleration down the barrel.

The Excalibur round used is a guided munition. I don't know what criteria they put on it counting as a direct hit (their claimed circular error probability is probably classified, and commercially sensitive even if it's not), but it's probably not "centre of projectile hits centre of bullseye".So "acceptably close hit to target from 70 km with a guidance kit attached to the projectile" is more accurate, and still good news for orders.

Probably with precise coordinates provided prior to shot!

That seems extraordinary precision, even for a 30 ft barrel.

Direct hit from 70km away!......Using an incremental upgrade to BAE Systems’ Paladin M109A7 self-propelled howitzer that includes a 30 ft (9.1 m) gun tube designed to launch 58 calibre (155 mm) rounds

Wad, I dont know about that. I dont think they have any more 50+ than comparable workforces in other large enterprises

I thought that BAe had a particularly high number of 50 something employees who probably won't be working in 10 yrs.

Wad. In my experience the company look at these apprentices and graduates as being senior management and manufacturing leadersd in 10 - 15 years time, possibly 20. In the early 2000's I worked with many ex-apprentices from the 70's and 80's and they certainly knew their stuff.
As for why the numbers now, I know expected skill set requirements and projected retirement data plays a big part. Future submarine projects, airsystems (beyond Tempest) and general life cycle requirements/replacements can be seen at least 20 years before they are needed. An apprentice who has done 3, 4 or 5 years training, then 15 years productive work should be in a position to be the chief engineer/Project Manager/Budget holder etc of those projects.

BAe don't mention in their apprentice advert why they need so many ; there is a demographic bomb in the whole company , RW probably has some numbers.
Good time to be looking to add to the workforce , there is a lot of demand out there for a stable job with a reliable employer.

Why Europe’s FCAS projects won’t join formation in 2021
One certainty for 2021 is that Europe’s parallel efforts to develop the region’s next-generation Future Combat Air System will not see a convergence.

Showdown in the Pacific: America's F-35 Stealth Fighter vs. China's J-31
There is the old saying that "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" – and whether that is true or not, in the world of military hardware there have certainly been a lot of imitations, particularly in aircraft. The People's Republic of China has been among the nations that have arguably been most "sincere" in terms of military flattery in that case.

Another disappointing day of trading, slightly up then falling back again.

It's simply following the FTSE with auto-trading, but deserves much better with current year forecasts and future order books. Still massively undervalued.

Sweden ups defense budget 40% due to regional tensions
STOCKHOLM — Sweden’s parliament on Tuesday approved a 40 percent increase in the defense budget for 2021-2025 because of tensions in the Baltic Sea region in recent years, with officials saying Russia is the main reason for the move.

Russia Uses Augmented Reality Technologies To Produce Su-57 Fighter Jet

The videos were allegedly filmed in March 2020 at the United Aircraft Corporation’s Komsomolsk-on-Amur Aviation Plant and show a first person look through an augmented reality headset providing workers with interactive features during the Su-57 assembling.

The system works with QR codes that are being attached to Su-57 parts and allow specialists to work with the combination of real-world and virtual objects.

The leaked videos with the augmented reality technology show the previously unrevealed level of the sophistication in the production of Russian fighter jets.

In comparison, Northrop Grumman employs projectors to highlight parts of the F-35 on the production line and help specialists involved in the fighter jet assembling. Nonetheless, this can hardly been compared with the interactive augmented reality.

It seems that there are some little gaps in the mainstream media concept of painting Russia the third-world power that can nothing besides selling energy resources and meddling in the US election.

Common myths about shipbuilding in Scotland

When reporting on naval procurement related topics, we frequently encounter myths regarding shipbuild in Scotland, ranging from claims on one side that all of the orders were cancelled to claims on the other that a ‘Frigate Factory’ has been built on the Clyde.
