U.S. Productivity Rose 2.6% in Second Quarter; Labor Costs Cool

By Shobhana Chandra

Sept. 6 (Bloomberg) -- Worker productivity in the U.S. accelerated more than forecast in the second quarter and labor costs cooled, lowering the risk of a pickup in inflation as the Federal Reserve weighs cutting interest rates.

Productivity, a measure of employee efficiency, rose at an annual rate of 2.6 percent from April through June, the most in almost 2 years and up from a previous estimate of 1.8 percent, revised figures from the Labor Department in Washington showed today. Labor expenses climbed at a 1.4 percent pace, less than reported last month.

Economists are projecting the central bank will reduce its interest-rate target this month to limit the damage to the economy caused by increasing subprime mortgage defaults. Greater efficiency allows policy makers to focus on stimulating growth rather than containing price gains.

``It's a little bit of a reprieve from pressures on labor costs,'' Michael Gregory, a senior economist at BMO Capital Markets in Toronto, said before the report. ``Things aren't getting any worse. At least it's not a barrier for the Fed to not cut rates.''

morning all.......well arn't things a bit better today generally..........I see the US closed higher than when we closed...........which helps and I see the US futures up about 50 already..............

active buying for Axon from the start by the looks and already 3mms have moved up...............

so the question is..............who was yesterdays late afternoon buyer...........and are they the same people that's making the orderbook pretty decent today??????????

got some more broker figures..........KBC has up'd their pretax to £33.91m a rise of over 10% and Arbuthnot have raised their 2007 to £34.2m, a rise of around 10%........which probably makes £9.25-£9.50 region at a guess as I think they were £8.50-£8.75 before........

so the broker expectations I guess are now £9.50-£10...........I'll need to find KBC's and Arbuth's target share price ...........
