Mrs May shuffles to the dispatch box .... she grimaces .... picks her nose one last time and speaks

'' You lot are trying to make a monkey out of me and I am not having any more of it.
I admit I never fully understood this Bexit thing and neither did my handlers but none of you has helped me to sort whatever it is out ... so I am leaving to go back to our small piece of forested belt north of the Congo with my mate.
So I hereby announce to the house a general election is called for May 1st .
Let's see how you like them bananas when those humans out there put the Gorillas in instead. ''

MT admits they've just'been scratching the surface' and there are 'signifiicant opportunities for growth'. In the meantime, the dividends are great and well covered. More than happy to hold on to these shares.

that's the only reason - the divi yield, there won't be any growth unless it gets taken over, net profits have flat lined and share price hasn't improved since the financial crisis 10 years ago

Why I’m a buyer of Aviva shares and that 8.1% dividend yield

Hi Edmund, Yes have looked at Phoenix and purchased today , cannot understand why they are so cheap, income is guaranteed with high yield . Such a compelling reason to buy with as you say good div cover. Will probably buy more Monday. I was thinking of waiting for some Brexit fallout but to be honest only think they will attract more buyers where funds are looking for a safe haven.

Snorky, I have been in Phoenix for 4 years and Aviva for 9, and I would say that Phoenix is by far the more reliable performer. It has dividends covered by pretty secure projected cashflow from their closed books for 20 years at least (in fact with the addition of the the new Standard Life "open" book that could run much longer), and more upside is available from things like bulk purchase annuities and more acquisitions of closed books. For me it is a secure and very respectable dividend (yield currently hovering around 7%) and some decent upside (from further deals and a resonably likely re-rating given the high yield). Brexit exposure minimal and completely prepared. One of my largest holdings.

It's their exposure to the EU market once a deal gets announced it'll rally

And if you play it right, very profitable.

Can't get my head around the valuation here. Dividend looks safe and attractive but Mr Market continues to hammer the share price. Such a weird stock to own (and has been so for quite some time).

Surprised this hasn't been bid up for the 20p dividend?

It always amuses me that when they spent all that money to rebrand from Norwich Union to Aviva, I remember one of the justifications was that the new heavily researched name was unique and could not be mistaken for anybody else. Meanwhile in the real world we also have Arriva, Aveva, and doubtless others...

STRONG BUY, we only go lower on a no deal brexit and/or recession. If the divi is held, this is the bottom. US will cut rates, BOE may move to 1%. Will not affect the divi yield.

Be prepared for the only benefit to be the dividends....unless you sell when you're 20% up, for as sure as night follows day, that gain will vanish.
