Missed the dividend of course but took the XD gamble effect and bought close to the opening at 485p. So the recovery has been quite amazing. IAG went XD today and that has actually gone to a premium of 3p over the XD price. The latter was worth just 2,3p but the movement like Aviva has been a pleasant surprise. I guess investors are looking at companies which have strong cash-flow and improving prospects with interest rates set to fall here, Europe and in the US. September can be a very volatile month for shares and one needs to look forward to an improving trend in October.

On refection I should have added yesterday but hindsight is a virtue sadly missing in my skill set. Anyway happy to hold for the longer term with holding much increased.

Ex-dividend today.

Did you know the general public own 21.6% of Aviva?

Rather modest really as I am looking to add tomorrow if half a chance in bigger size that CEO and husband.

Eurofox. how are you keeping as I went down with this new Covid virus on Monday. Bad for 2 days but this afternoon recovered to 80% normal self. Take care as this virus is becoming wide spread here, Europe and USA.

Correct, if you ever listen to the Governor or any other commentator they caution about reading individual data. Indeed the Bank extensively uses fan diagrams in their inflation report indicating a range of likely outcomes. Yet we talk about DB surpluses and deficits as if they are a fact implying that whatever discount rate is being used to value the liabilities is going to apply for the whole of their term, plausibly more than 100 years for a DB scheme. Ultra low rates should have been treated as a freak and ignored for funding purposes

The use by HMG and the Treasury of Quantitative Easing to artificially reduce Long Term rates totally scewed (and screwed!!) the calculation of Pension Fund Liabilities.

I heard a comment in a LCP seminar last week that there is a trend towards DB schemes deciding to "run on" rather than go for buy out/in. It may be that the bulk annuity market demand is not as high as first thought.

Actuaries are on the whole a lot cleverer than me, but they do talk a lot of tosh on pension liability modelling. In recent times the majority of schemes were in deficit, a cause for concern which drove political decision making. However, that political decision making takes a very long time to take effect through legislation and then regulation. So now the actuaries are questioning the relevance of the policies because most schemes are now in surplus. But all that has actually changed is the valuation of liabilities. The opposite to this is what led, in the 1980's to pension holidays when the Inland Revenue effectively stopped corporates from making contributions to funds. The actuarial profession needs to put massive health warnings on these arbitrary models because too many treat them as facts

1rob, I like your idea of an Aviva/LGEN merger. I suspect there would be a lot of scrutiny from the regulators. I don't think major M & A is Blancs style. So far its been simplification followed by organic growth. But why not? The cost synergies would be huge. I do agree with your comment about the Aviva management leading it, but suspect that is easier said than done particularly if its a nil premium merger of equals rather than a takeover

Something is up today. FTSE is stalling, yet aviva up almost 2%.

Would love some takeover speculation. Aviva is my biggest holding.

Can a takeover be in the offing when a director buys ? Don’t think they can for a few weeks. Or am I wrong ?

1robbob, somethings got to happen to LGEN as the share price is pathetic at the moment and for the last few months. Does the new boss, coming from banking really understand insurance?

This message board has been far too calm over recent months!!!. As we all bask in the success of investments made a year or so ago.

So here is an attempt to stir the pot!!

QUESTION:
How about AV merging with LGEN, with Dame Amanda at the helm
ie AVs management in control
Would then have 3 Business areas of true scale: Life Assurance, General Insurance and Asset Management
.....If you hadn't noticed they have virtually the same Market Caps
