Some big personal news from me. I wasn't allowed to say anything until this point, but I have volunteered for vaccine trials for Covid-19 that Bupa are running in partnership with Cambridge University. It's important that we all do our part to beat this virus. The vaccine is the one that has been developed in Russia. I received my first dose yesterday morning at 08:00 am, and I wanted to let you all know that it’s completely safe, with иo side effects whatsoeveя, and that I feelshκι я чув;стk4;ую себ;я нем;ноk5;о стр;анl5;о и я дум;аю, что; выт;ащl0;л осл;инm9;е уши;. чув;стk4;ую себ;я нем;ноk5;о стр;анl5;о.

hi eurofox. Not sure things were very different more recently. I recall going to a meeting as part of an ABI delegation with reps from various ministries. We were prepared to make a deal on almost any basis but could not do so because the ministries could not agree a common government position. Only time I have seen anything similar was when I went to a meeting with Renault in Paris where we were discussing the potential for a telematics deal. They had people from the manufacturing side and from Renault Finsnce - and we just sat there as they shouted at each other. Never did the deal.

Loved Yes Minister - in my younger working days, I was a consultant leading gateway reviews of major government projects in the late 90's and early 00's and I can tell you, Yes Minister was exactly like it was!

Just because the market has reacted and Aviva price has risen does not mean all is well and management will necessarily make the obvious decisions on the likes of dividends. Too many insurance company managements (not just Aviva tbf) remind me of that great Yes Minister sketch where Sir Humphrey is meeting Sir Desmond Glazebrook, a bank chairman. The pertinent bits go;

Sir Humphrey: You're a banker. Surely you read the FT?
Sir Desmond: Never do. Can't understand it. Full of economic theory.
Sir Humphrey: Why do you buy it?
Sir Desmond: Oh, you know. It's part of the uniform.

and

Sir Desmond Glazebrook : They've broken the rules.
Sir Humphrey : What, you mean the insider trading regulations?
Sir Desmond Glazebrook : No.
Sir Humphrey : Oh. Well, that's one relief.
Sir Desmond Glazebrook : I mean of course they've broken those, but they've broken the basic, the basic rule of the City.
Sir Humphrey : I didn't know there were any.
Sir Desmond Glazebrook : Just the one. If you're incompetent you have to be honest, and if you're crooked you have to be clever. See, if you're honest, then when you make a pig's breakfast of things the chaps rally round and help you out.
Sir Humphrey : If you're crooked?
Sir Desmond Glazebrook : Well, if you're making good profits for them, chaps don't start asking questions; they're not stupid. Well, not that stupid.
Sir Humphrey : So the ideal is a firm which is honest and clever.
Sir Desmond Glazebrook : Yes. Let me know if you ever come across one, won't you.

Sometimes I think they had a mole in Aviva ..... or Barclays ..... or any one of numerous financial services companies. Good job they are all so currently undervalued that management is priced in.

Also more difficult to rebase a dividend when the share price is climbing.

Could be win win!

AB now has no room whatsoever to disappoint on the 26th

Positive news on Trading and Dividends could fuel a further move upwards

However a lacklustre statement (as is Aviva's norm!) could be catastophic
.....although could/should bring on corporate activity - perhaps

Something happening? However, it looks as though the market is rotating slightly out of high growth but somewhat unpredictable stocks and weighting into capital value stocks with more certain cash generation and ability to pay responsible dividends.

185 ish was one of my best trades on this, the mists of time cause me to forget most but not this one. Though from memory, Pru was almost at parity and then over the following years soared to multiples of Aviva.

eurofox,

As I said I have traded my price down to that average, not bought at that price. Recently sold at 289.5p and bought back at 258 and 267p. For some reason I have been quite lucky with Aviva which makes up for some of the disasters elsewhere!!😂

Did buy at 180p in 2009 but sold way too early and missed out on substantial gains so remember it well.

I have traded my average down to 185p and so shouldn’t get the opportunity to buy below my average price, but would be a buyer if I had cash at the time around 273p where there is a gap on the chart.

ftime-

I was relatively heavily in cash from the beginning of this year until about June when I decide to start adding on a monthly basis. I still got walloped when the market crashed in feb/mar just I escaped some damage as I transferred out of HL and was a forced seller of some their own funds when this happened as they were non transferrable. It was luck not foresight.

For me there is no one single factor that would make me suddenly shift between cash/shares. There have been plenty of known points of uncertainty - Covid/US election/Brexit that are going to shift the market, but that is always the case. For me its the single issues - seeing a share I like or selling up. More of a gradual tidal shift than a single wave. I am roughly level now over the last 12months which I guess is decent compared to the FTSE.

I was going to add a few more, but up until now my rule, like others here, has been to add at prices below my average + at times of weakness but my average price (268) is now way below where we are now and I have no intention of selling because this has much further to go; so now the justification for buying can only be a serious dip in an upward trend (and I'm still 80% cash).

eurofox,

Don’t they go hand in hand? You can’t constantly keep buying a share and never sell unless you have an unlimited resource of money, in which case why would you need to speculate?

Nice to see it go through 306p, let’s hope it can hold it this time.

hi cjac. Agree with you that £5 would be good as an exit point for an independent Aviva, but I would want more from any bidder (although I am not expecting a bid).

Interesting to see what happens tomorrow with AV. share price rising 9.7%, against LGEN 14%, and Pru 17.9% gain. Despite the recovery today one still has to consider developments at Aviva regarding further foreign asset sales and what effect that could have on the share price Despite some caution over the Pfizer/German entity really positive vaccine news, the Oxford Uni senior appeared very optimistic on BBC Newsnight over the news today and hinted that the Oxford/ANZ vaccine projects and others were also getting close to their own positive declarations. Hopefully the market will continue to look forward to better days ahead for the good of the global economy and moving on from the major disruption of Covid-19. The Chinese appear to have moved on very successfully and I personally believe that we will match their recovery fairly soon.
