Share price drop today makes no sense unless it’s believed management are holding on to money in anticipation of larger then expected claims. My view is management never had bottle , have no entrepreneurial skills and have never been up to the job .

Regardless of that they must have known how shareholders felt about the dividend and cancelled it anyway.

Shows how much clout we as shareholders have over management.

Must be a takeover target now with all this cash reserve

Debt reduction is their focus, forget any special dividend.
CFO underlines this in red on any presentation.

Looks like a similar pattern to HSBC, it may drop further tomorrow, looking to top up at around 220p.

Trying to see some good in all this and struggling tbh. I guess with the depressed price, buying now and (possibly) receiving a special dividend in Q4, you could actually be exploiting this FUBAR to your advantage.

Bought some more on that proviso.

scobak, uncertainty helps if looking for lower prices.
You often pay a high price for a clearer view.

Some of the cyclicals are Up 50-60% from recent lows.

Would be surprised if we don't see at least one more wave of selling
for wider markets, but who knows.

Why do experienced investors fail to understand dividends?

If you were about to be paid a dividend on ex divi date the shares fall by the exact amount.

When you take them as scrips in an ISA the share price falls but you buy some back.
little difference.

If you are desperate for cash, then sell some shares. The difference between income and capital gains if anything favours doing it this way.
And it costs peanuts in charges for a nominee account.

Even in a bull market, the AV share price didn't do anything. This management team are not good enough to run a company like this.....

Can I ask for restraint if selling. Why be in a rush to reinvest into something else when you are likely to pick up a bargain or so by holding cash for the longer term?
I am sure there will be many bargains to pick up when some of the overall panic dissipates and the uncertainty becomes clearer.

Here's an idea
Seeing as how the company is following the government advise and cutting the dividend
Why do they now follow those guidelines and limit their monthly salary to that put forward by HMG and limit their pay and benefits to 2500 limit a month
This would apply across the board and to all management and workers

The dividend situation means my income has been reduced by 95% !!

Many CEOs and directors taking their full pay.

Very angry.

AV management are treating shareholders as cash cows. all staff still on full pay, Senior management still on course for bonuses, and no mention of pay cuts like other companies are doing, charity contributions up to high levels. And shareholders who own the company in return get no dividend and have lost 50% of there investment over the last 12 months....Surely these are not the right people that should be running the business.

2008 Oil price maybe constrained with electric competition long term and maybe more expensive to retrieve so think Shell price will be very volatile

popper

trouble is a lot of the good stocks have already made big gains from
the lows a few weeks back. I was buying RDSB for 900p they won`t cut their divi
could have switched these over. but Shell is now 1450p

Shell will make it back to 2500p one day so maybe still a possibility, i will
take a few days to find a stock.

At least NSF is going in the right direction , but not adding anymore over there
already fully loaded.
