Why?....did nobody get any dividends in during those 28 years?....

Slightly disagree with your statement about them being a fantastic long term hold. They are marginally above a 28 year low, so except for those who bought them in the depths of the financial crisis, or last month, everyone else is losing.

Just take a look at the price action of LGEN today in comparison to AV to explain why an RNS is warranted.

I can't see any reason for them not to pay the dividend.

Yes indeed - CFO said strong balance sheet. They don't need to reiterate.

Sentiment has been dreadful across most boards , these are dire times. Metro , Aston Martin, Tullow, down near 90%, Restaurants , Hotels ,Oils getting absolute beating.

In all honesty I think we are lucky with Av. as it’s down around 40%

I don’t think them cancelling Dividends will be critical factor , it’s the reasons behind the cancelling. If they say business is pretty much as usual and financials are still strong but they are cancelling only due to government pressure then I don’t think it will be the end of the world for Aviva share price it may even rise.

Long term Aviva is a fantastic company to hold

If they pay, shows confidence and shareprice would be 350p.

In this environment nothing is certain till it's in the account !!I speak as a holder of HSBC who declared it and it went ex div before cancelling it under government pressure

Pans. I viewed that interview several times but never heard him say it would be paid.
A rolling banner said it would.

Doesn't count in my book.

Monty, spud. There seems to be a lot of 'if's' . L&G made their position clear . Why doesn't Av.?

I'm heavyly in here and want dividends paid and share price to double to where I bought in.

I cannot see why div will not be paid given it's more then covered and also USA financial companies are making noises saying they should be paid too.

Given uncertainty's it would be prudent for Av. to make announcement

Aviva CFO one week ago on CNBC when asked about the dividend : we declared it , we have the ability to do it and see no change to those plans Now unless something has changed materially with the company in the interim it looks safe to me

I would be amazed if they did not pay, fund managers, especially income funds, desperate for dividends, must be putting pressure on Aviva to pay.

From Evening Standard:

If L&G cuts and Aviva doesn’t then L&G gets crucified," said one industry observer. "They can’t act independently. They need to go as a group....

L&G are paying.

whatsup i asked that specific qn about whether they will furlough or not as it might be something that gets in way of divi (although thats not a definitive) and they confirmed they are not taking any govt money

careful. I don’t think AV. has asked HMG for a penny , not sure they will either. If staff are furloughed then they have a right to ask for 80%
whatsup32

If HMG are underwriting the whole economy and trying to keep businesses alive throughout this crisis, then they are right to demand a cancellation of dividends and bonuses.

I think AV. and Tulloch would be slaughtered if they cut the divi now, imho
