Yes agreed. Why don’t the people relying on the income from divis deserve it and why are the companies better capital allocators . Madness indeed and I expect aviva is zero now

.Gov has ordered the banks to cancel divs for 2019 & 2020 - regardless of their capital position & needs.

Anything can happen now. Lunatics in charge.

Clearly the large seller used the update to AA. exit the market or part exit

What IMO you are going to see is all firms stop paying dividends and conserve cash for the next 2 years in a Global recession.

Many will have to take on additional debt

Many will have to raise cash from very depressed share price levels as markets fall further

Those already carrying big debts and pension problems will be in a disadvantaged place compared to those that don't

''Cash will be king'' as they say

Special situations in certain sectors

Will be the order of the day

Till Covid-19 finally goes away

Which IMO could take years and might in fact never happen if it keeps on rolling around the world and self propagating itself in poorer 3rd world countries to return to Westernized more wealthy ones that got through the first wave/s.

"The Bank of England also fired a warning shot at insurers on Tuesday, saying they should think carefully before paying dividends or bonuses to senior staff. "We expect them to pay close attention to the need to protect policyholders and maintain safety and soundness, and in so doing to ensure that their firm can play its full part in supporting the real economy throughout the economic disruption arising from Covid-19," a separate letter explained"From the Guardian

Well it's awhole lot better than saying the div has been deferred, or cancelled.
But there's a lot of space between 23 April & 2 June - and even a lot of space between now & 23 April.

However, like spud, I believe the div will be paid, & on time.

The divi isn't safe until it's in the bank. A lot can happen between now and payday and even passing the ex-div date doesn't guarantee it will ever reach your account. I remain sceptical.

...... but hopeful.

I’ve just reviewed it a couple of times - he doesn’t mention the dividend

I don’t think he discusses the divi at all though? It’s a banner headline but not what he said? It’s not his decision anyway and it will be the NEDs that sign off on it. If loads of other companies don’t pay divis they might bottle it and fold so I think it’s highly uncertain still

Stock should pick up, as it now looks a safe divi haven.

Still Qualify for the 8% dividend if:

On 4 March 2020, the Directors agreed a recommendation to shareholders of a final dividend of 21.4 pence per share on Aviva ordinary shares. Subject to shareholder approval at the 2020 Annual General Meeting, the final dividend for the year ending 31 December 2019 will be paid on 2 June 2020 to shareholders on the Register of Members at the close of business on the record date of 24 April 2020.
