it is amazing to see this unfold again. i never thought i would see an 08/09 again having lived through that. whats amazing to me this time around is the differences and the similarities. its similar because equities are getting nailed of course including the insurers. its also similar with the market panic. however what is more striking are the differences: in 08 we saw incredible numbers of levered fund and cdo liquidations, this time around there are no systemic sectoral zeros like the banks in 08, since the fed stepped in there is no systemic issue in money and credit which is 50 times more important than equity markets, insurers are 2* capitalised under solvency2 vs icas regime and mostly they will have a positive underwriting result this year. it defies logic where they are trading now. none of them have any solvency issues and are quietly looking at the opportunity set for long term investors that is being presented now. they will likely have to be seen to not profit from this but i would be sure this is a fantastic opportunity for any sensible capital allocator now.

Unfortunately as a holder that is like saying we have every confidence in the manager - and the board of the football clubs sack him

I find that AV. lacks communication with shareholders compared to other companies, but have discovered that their Newsroom page on thier website is quite a good source of news.

Aviva update on solvency position ahead of investor conference

Aviva remains well capitalised, near the top of its working range. Based on the closing market position on 13 March 2020, our Solvency cover ratio is estimated at approximately 175%, after allowing for payment of our proposed final dividend (c.7 percentage points). The estimate does not allow for any increase in insurance claims or changes in experience or assumptions that may arise from Covid-19. We have expanded our hedging and ALM activity on equities, interest rates and credit spreads. As disclosed at our recent full year results, our centre cash position at the end of February was £2.4 billion.

It remains too early to quantify the potential impact on our financial performance arising from Covid-19. The effect on our financial results will depend on a range of factors, including the extent and duration of the period of disruption and the impact on the global economy. At this point, we remain focused on supporting our customers and colleagues while maintaining our financial and operational resilience.

I thought the insurance sector was a good defensive one to invest in but not so sure now......but I will still hold long term as no intention of selling.

I would have thought so yes. CFO kept talking about having a strong balance sheet this week.

Probably. No one has the definitive answer except maybe the board of directors of Aviva.

Matthew Dumigan: Aviva
Multinational insurance company Aviva (LSE: AV) recently posted record full-year profits for 2019. Return on equity reached 14.3% and there was a 6% rise in operating profit to £3.2bn.

Despite the uneasy situation in financial markets, Aviva’s strong and resilient balance sheet, which is designed to withstand volatility, should significantly reduce the impact of Covid-19 on long-term performance.

Overall, an impressive set of results combined with a price-to-earnings ratio of around 3.43 indicates that the company could be massively undervalued. With that in mind, I believe Aviva presents a great buying opportunity for April and beyond.

Matthew Dumigan has no position in Aviva.

what's likely to happen if they declare dividends will be paid is shares go back to roughly where they were yesterday. No big deal given I and most paid over £4 here. Like it or not we are stuck here , it’s too late to sell and probably too early to buy .
