With the population in China it will have to be many million affected with the virus before we have a pandemic this is just at the present time a small virus like SARS and its effect was short lived.

Regardless of what the virus does To underlying profits here or in any other stock it hopefully would be short lived. However the market reaction will be well overdone in a panic scenario that’s why I would advocate staying in cash for a while. I like this stock and have bought in at some good levels previously and way below its current price and will do again I suspect as always don’t pull that trigger to early.

Business's cover themselves for all kinds of eventualities, many of which could be invoked due to this outbreak...there will be consequences for all insurance co's.

I just took out travel insurance for USA . I called to check what cover I had if I cancelled or airline cancelled flights and believe or not it’s not covered . Travel insurance doesn’t cover as much as we think .

All indications are that this is far worse than the 2003 sars virus. This could hit Aviva badly.

eurofax’s comment is reasonable given this is a insurance blog , I was thinking along same lines . I’m also wondering about pending liabilities ie , in transport ‘cruise ships loss of profits ? Claims? , travel insurance claims?

Lord Gnome.. I am one of the vulnerable old people, having type 2 diabetes - have had pneumonia 3 times all with long recoveries during my life, but then had a pneumovac jab 20 years ago (first cohort) with a follow-up jab 10 years ago (before they realised a booster was not necessary). I have now been pneumonia free for 20 years touch wood.

Thanks for that eurofox. Sadly, I have no intention of going anytime soon just to make insurance company profits look a bit better.

if lots of old people with annuities die this could be a silver lining for companies that have sold those annuities

Aviva have some exposure but if the market panics in a big way all stocks will suffer and you could see a large correction coming. I can definitely see it with the information out there now and the fact the virus has a long incubation period that will add great uncertainty and the markets don’t like that add in the economic factors and it could be a perfect storm.

Agree with post 654
Virus in China looks like growing and growing to pandemic. There will in my view be huge opportunities as well as losses .
Companies that manufacture in China will move manufacturing to other countries
Companies that import goods from China will be prevented from importing example food products.
Economy in China coming to a halt causing problems across the world for anyone who trades with China
Not certain how this will effect Aviva
