While the news was expected (Roku and Comcast announced plans for the app about nine months ago), the market initially reacted otherwise, Simon Leopold, analyst with Raymond James, said today in a research note with the title: ARRS: The Sky is Not Falling, Roku at Comcast Is Not a Shock. “Most, including us, see the traditional set top box (STB) as challenged, but offset by the deployment of next generation IP gateways and media boxes along with infrastructure to support them, and today's release does not alter our view on the trajectory,” Leopold wrote. “The initiative does not alter ARRIS' trajectory that includes increased Network & Cloud and Broadband sales while traditional STBs decline.”

RBC Capital analyst Mitch Steves came out to defend ARRIS Group (NASDAQ: ARRS) saying concerns about Comcast offering its Xfinity TV service on a Roku set-top box are "overdone" and the news was previously announced in April 2016. Steves commented, "Comcast announced that it will offer Xfinity TV service on a Roku set-top box. We think the price reaction is overdone given the following: 1) there is an Xfinity application linked to Apple TV products today which appears to be similar to the new offering with Roku; 2) an IP gateway - Arris product - will still be needed for streaming capabilities; 3) the incremental news is the Beta release, as this was announced back in April of 2016 before Comcast signed warrants with Arris; and 4) this would not impact Network and Cloud ramps through the year. Net/net: given that this partnership was originally announced in April of 2016, we do not view the Beta launch as a material negative to the stock and would be buying the dip on the reaction." The firm maintained an Outperform rating and price target of $35.

Bit rash today's reaction - old news!

On Wednesday, April 20, 2016, Comcast announced that it has partnered with Roku and Samsung to launch a new XFINITY TV partner app on Roku devices and 2016 Samsung Smart TVs soon.
