Built some time around 2000, this abandoned outdoor movie theater is located somewhere around the southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt.

As the story goes, a wealthy French businessman visited the region at the end of the last millennium, and thought that the area was missing an outdoor theater. Having a considerable amount of money to throw around, he decided to build one with his own capital. He had old seats, a generator, and a screen hauled in from Cairo to build it with.

However, the locals didn’t seem to like this idea; and so when the day of the first screening came, some of the locals had, overnight, destroyed the screen and the generators. It never saw even a single screening.

o/t postscript to the "2% tax" issue.

Hargreaves Lansdown sent out a note yesterday saying that their market maker had queried HMRC on the application of the 1.5% SDRT and 0.5% stamp duty on sales of Arris shares held in CREST. As a result they have refunded the 2% originally charged on my 29th July disposal. Very nice. Now if only they could do something about the forex charges.

Thanks everyone. So from all 3 replies I think I'll conclude that as an Arris shareholder I needn't be too concerned about the development.

AlexMcDonald description of the CA market is covers the bases for CA but I fear we are both out of touch of the latest developments in DRM and how this will be done over IP networks.

This article from JUNE 23, 2016 gives a flavour of the disruption to come:

Some one making in-roads into the Motorola / Scientific Atlanta duopoly must have been seen as a question of *when* not *whether*. They both have been trying to eat away at Nagra's markets in the past.

In the article 1gw links to, Mari Silbey starts by saying "[Nagra] Put another nail in the old-school-cable coffin". Well I believe that Arris have their own hammer and nails, and have been aware that the turnkey MPEG networks, where they supplied the headends and the STBs, will be superseded by a more varied environment where DOCSIS and optical networks connect to home gateways that feed tablets and mini-STBs or better still direct to TVs.

Remember the words of Mr. Bergstrom, Lisa Simpson’s substitute teacher, “Everybody has a talent.” For Shunsuke Tani in Japan, that special talent is creating gravity-defying, stacked coin sculptures suing 1 and 5 yen coins.

Tani posts his creations to a twitter account where he often shares how much time each sculpture took to create (usually 2 – 3 hours). He also adds some self-deprecating humor like “I have no other skills in life, other than this” or “I sacrificed 2 hours of my life.”
Each of Tani’s creations is perfectly balanced, no glue or photo manipulation is used in the process. To prove this he sometime share videos demonstrating just how easily his sculptures can fall apart:

Geektastic LEGO builder Robert Lundmark created this fantastic model of Jabba the Hutt, infamous giant slug space gangster, aboard his hoversled. Jabba looks so good, it’s hard to believe he’s made of plastic LEGO bricks, but our favorite detail is the little LEGO Salacious B. Crumb.

I think the keyword here is legacy. I can envisage Arris recognising that they need to flow with the tide in their own weighted economic interests. Their future action is probably averaged a lot further back in the pipe, and unblocking something near the taps can allow a much greater flow through the networks and to even more outlets. We should note Mari's 'old-school-cable' reference too, and the new economics of 'broadband gateways, network gear and cloud-based software and services' within the evolving business models for cpe. I read the overstatement comment in the context of what we are now watching decoded out of the rear window, whilst the big picture is the one looking forward into new paradigms of distribution which double with every breath of new demand. We are seeing example too of not being able to keep up with demand even in networks being upgraded at pace. The future will repeatedly trump legacy issues on a scale we can hardly envisage and not just in this industry.

1gw - my understanding of this is that there were 2 Conditional Access (CA) software offerings in the US cable company systems - one from Motorola (now Arris) and the other from Cisco.

NAGRA is another CA system that has been used a lot in EMEC and some other countries.

Pace used to port all of the 3 (plus others such as IRDETO, Videocrypt, etc).

By facilitating the NAGRA system into their headends, Arris is also likely to port the NAGRA CA software onto Arris boxes. It also gives the cable operators more flexibility.

However, we might get a better explanation from MBHEMS !! He is more qualified than I.

Curious Lightreading article on conditional access: "Nagra, Altice Unlock TV Security Market in US"

While commenting that Arris has most to lose from the deal and it being hard to overstate the announcement's importance, Mari Silbey also says Nagra said that Arris worked with Altice to facilitate its implementation.

Anyone able to comment? Is it somehow linked to the "Unlock the Box" FCC initative?

"...It's hard to overstate the importance of this announcement. Previously, cable systems using headend equipment from either Arris Group Inc. (Nasdaq: ARRS) or Cisco Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: CSCO) had to use set-tops with a compatible security system. But, according to Nagra, Arris worked with Altice to make adjustments in the cable headend to enable support for additional security technology supporting a wider range of set-tops.
...
Arris, which has the most to lose from the deal, declined to comment on the news..."
