Ariel photography has exploded in recent years, but even within the genre Filip Wolak‘s beautiful landscapes of rural New Jersey and beyond dusted with snow are a little different. He shoots them while flying just 1,000 feet off the ground with his camera pointed toward the ground.

Imre Potyó spent 12 days waiting to make this amazing photo of mayflies over the Rába river in Hungary. The tiny insects, called Ephoron virgo, are but a few months old when they take to the air at the end of July or start of August. Great swarms appear over the rivers of central Europe at sunset to mate by the millions, only to die by dawn.

Fabian Hefner was walking near his home in northern Switzerland six months ago when he saw a puddle of gasoline and water on the road. The metallic swirl of color took his breath away and inspired his dazzling series Oil Spill.

Kazakhstan is a country with two capitals—one political, one cultural. This dichotomy was born of the president’s sudden decision a generation ago to up and move the capital from the ancient city of Almaty to Astana, a remote town remade into a glittering “Manhattan of the steppe.”

THE LAST WOOLLY mammoth roamed the Earth some 4,000 years ago, but even now, they are hunted. Men roam the arctic, boring through the permafrost and excavating the remains of these mighty creatures in search of their ivory tusks. It’s risky, but lucrative, work.

Headline: FCC's Wheeler gives passionate defense of net neutrality rules

Link:

Link to video in the artcle.

Quote: Tom Wheeler, chairman of America's comms watchdog the FCC, has given a passionate defense of net neutrality rules in his last public speech – and warned his fellow commissioners not to go backwards by removing them.

Commentary: I've just pulled the first line at the quote as I couldn't chose from many interesting points in the article. Relevance to Arris? I would just be reading tea leaves but any news that promotes interest in this sector may encourage a serious evaluation of Arris's prospects.

The forests of beech, oak, and ash trees that dot the Danish countryside erupt in shades of orange and gold each fall. As beautiful as it is to see from the forest floor, it’s even more impressive from above. “When you look down, the colors are more dense,” says Danish photographer Michael B. Rasmussen. “You see much more of them at once.”

Kevin Frayer’s photographs of illegal Chinese steel factories look like postcards from the dawn of the Industrial Revolution. Thick smoke spews out of tall stacks, steam rises from vast pits, and molten steel flows across the ground like lava. All around, men toil without even basic protective gear. “It was like stepping back in time,” says Frayer, who spent four days at two steel factories in Inner Mongolia in early November. “The way of working seemed unchanged and unaffected by technology.”
