30/11/2016 18:02 | -0.3% for me today. High today 7.1C on a sunny day except for brightness under quite a bit of streaky thin high cloud. Still gaps in it, though, so cooling off a bit. | aleman
30/11/2016 17:07 | A healthy looking £1000+ gain for the SIPP at 4pm turned into £15.32 by 4:30 but at least it was a gain! The pot managed +0.13% thanks mainly to RDSB with help from LLOY & FDI Shopping tonight, a voucher from TSCO so they get the business this week! Need to get our skates on and get back for the conclusion of The Missing! | mrphil
30/11/2016 16:54 | Not allowed to say the increased minimum wage will have a big effect but of course it will. In any business, a certain percentage of your income will be allocated to wages costs and if all works well you end up with a small amount of profit at the end of the year. Of course you can force that percentage higher but there is only one pot of money so something else will have to give. Sure you can take it out of profit (if there is enough there) but how does the company survive then? In our own business, the cost of the increase in minimum wage plus the cost of auto-enrolment will equal a typical good year of profit by 2020. I'm just glad retirement isn't too far away, it's just getting too hard! | mrphil
30/11/2016 16:33 | Is lots of job losses in shops the cost of the increased minimum wage? Most retail jobs go at Christmas. They hang on with fingers crossed when business is quiet and then throw in the towel when Christmas is weak. There is less to see at those shops in Leeds and Southport, now, so I am less likely to browse the shops that remain. I think the swing online is now really changing the high street in a fundamental way. It will affect all shops as footfall reduces. Councils will lose parking revenues, as well. | aleman
30/11/2016 16:25 | On the subject of Italy, just had a conversation with the MD of one of our Italian business partners and he is very keen to come over and discuss Brexit! | mrphil
30/11/2016 16:23 | Aleman, I read that the high street didn't do as well on Black Friday as they're losing out to online. Fareham is now charity shops or coffee shops which I think is becoming a common theme along high streets across the country. We have taken that choice by going online but I think "we" are going to feel a lot poorer for it in the long run. I really dislike the way it's going, and all this "must have it now" mentality. We ordered some charity cards and other bits from RSPB and even they delivered on Sunday! Why? Quite happy to wait a couple of days. Venison casserole with red wine for dinner at lunchtime, cooked totally on the log burner this morning. Absolutely delicious and no oven required! | mrphil
30/11/2016 14:31 | According to the BBC TV weather report graphic on last night's low temperatues, we did not drop below freezing last night in our area. I suppose I imagined the white pavements on the way to school and the need to remember my woolly hat! The forecast for tonight is around 5C (Met Office says 6C) - so I'll guess at 2C. ta courtesy of Ogimet Minimum Temperature Last 24h - 11/30/2016 at 14:00 UTC No. Location Station ID Amount 1 Sennybridge (United Kingdom) 03507 -9.5°C 2 Benson (United Kingdom) 03658 -8.5°C 3 Farnborough (United Kingdom) 03768 -8°C 4 Shobdon (United Kingdom) 03520 -7.9°C 5 Charlwood (United Kingdom) 03769 -7.4°C 6 Hereford/Credenhill (United Kingdom) 03522 -7.4°C 7 Pembrey Sands (United Kingdom) 03605 -7.1°C 8 Yeovilton (United Kingdom) 03853 -7.1°C 9 Pershore (United Kingdom) 03529 -6.9°C 10 Odiham (United Kingdom) 03761 -6.6°C 11 Northolt (United Kingdom) 03672 -6.2°C 12 Shawbury (United Kingdom) 03414 -6.2°C 13 Lyneham (United Kingdom) 03740 -6.1°C 14 Trawscoed (United Kingdom) 03503 -6.1°C 15 Bournemouth Airport (United Kingdom) 03862 -6°C Script courtesy of Michael Holden of Relay Weather. Data courtesy of Ogimet Western USA getting wisespread snow, now - not rare but quite a lot of snow across the Northern Hemisphere for the end of November. I've been to Leeds to a shopping centre I visit fairly regularly and noticed 3 units have closed down in the last fortnight and found another 3 just outside that closed at an unknown time recently. (Toiletries/scent, pawnborker, dentist, jeweller, forget other two) After seeing 8 shops shut on Southport high street, I'm starting to wonder if this is an alarm bell ringing. (I think I commented recently about a sudden proliferation of charity shops at the Leeds shopping centre a few weeks back, as well.) | aleman
30/11/2016 11:15 | Next week's vote might set off volatility as it highlights troubles in Italian banks, besides threatening EU breakup. | aleman
30/11/2016 11:10 | So Russia and Syria must be bombing Turkish troops - as of 3 months ago? | aleman
30/11/2016 11:01 | Oil just jumped back over $50 as the £ fell a bit against the $. The FTSE Oil and Gas Index is up 3.4%. | aleman
30/11/2016 11:00 | Aleman, sounds like you need to get yourself a cider press! We planted three small apple trees at our woods two years ago but sadly lost the Spartan for reasons unknown. The other two are Jazz and a new variety Cobra which is a cross between a Cox and a Bramley so can be eaten as a dessert apple or cooked. We're thinking of replacing the Spartan with maybe a Mulberry tree for something a bit different. We also have a Damson an Almond and some wild cherry. | mrphil
30/11/2016 10:14 | Possibly a Blackcap? | mrphil
30/11/2016 08:29 | Morning All. Down to -2.7°C at 6:15 this morning, coldest yet! Nice little jump for TCN this morning, you'll be pleased Aleman! | mrphil
29/11/2016 23:25 | Got back from London, complete with sheepskin, scarf, hat and gloves. I had about a quarter of an hour waiting on Blackfriars platform for the train, but no wind, so not so cold. The car said it was -2°C on the way home. Probably very cold tomorrow morning. I'm down -0.235% on teh day today (FTSE100 -0.404%). Worst falls: BLT -3.03%, INDV -2.43% and RIO -2.32%. Best rises: TW. +2.05%, WMH +1.75% and SGRO +1.65%. Miners and oils had a bad day. Time for bed. DF | deanforester
29/11/2016 19:37 | -0.13% [FTSE250 +0.08%] , Todays faller was KCOM where growth seems to have stalled for the time being as they redirect the business. Sold just under 40% of mine at the existing price before it fell away, the protected ISA dividend is worth harvesting though so looking for a cheaper re entry. Worst value fallers : BLT -3%, KCOM -7.2%, LLPC -1.8%, CSN -1.3%. Highest value risers : IGR +4%, TLPR +2.1%, BT.A +1.2%, BEZ +1.2%. Temp -1c, another clear day but the frost never shifted. | blueliner
29/11/2016 17:03 | Tale of two again today with the pot managing +0.09% thanks to FFY, SGC & LGEN but not so good for the SIPP which lost -0.08% due to BP., GSK & UU. We are forecast a couple more similar days of cloudless skies but low temperatures and I'm not complaining. I can live with -2°C overnight all the while we have plenty of logs! New series on BBC1 tonight, might take a look at that. | mrphil
29/11/2016 16:59 | Only a few blues today but they had a heavier weighting so +0.1%. Global dividend news: 0.0C here now. They are still forecasting cloud and warmer temperatures spreading from the Northwest but now suggest it will arrive later this evening. | aleman
29/11/2016 16:31 | DF, don't forget the hat and scarf! | mrphil
29/11/2016 16:30 | Aleman, we were wrapped up nice and warm and as there was no real breeze to speak of it was actually OK. Mind you, we did have the heating going! Falls Creek is a beautiful area, but I think it's somewhere I would like to visit on holiday's rather than live there. Anyway, it's too far away from the sea! Another up and down day but I think BP. has managed to secure a win for the red corner today. | mrphil
29/11/2016 16:03 | -6°C first thing, up to +1°C at lunchtime and back to zero now. I'm off to London shortly for a meeting. Sheepskin Jacket time, I think. Despite thick gloves, my hands were freezing this morning. DF | deanforester
29/11/2016 15:54 | Lovely pic, MrP, but it must have been cold. We've just hit our forecasted 1.0C low for tonight already after only managing a 3.0C high. The predicted cloud to keep the temperature up has not arrived yet. The house has felt warm enough with it being sunny all day but the frost has lingered in the shadows and it's even been cold in the sun outside. No birds in the sky tonight. we saw hundreds of brids flying south in V-formation groups yesterday. I presume they were geese deciding it was too cold in the Northern UK as well as the Arctic and Canada? So will you be seling up and moving to Fall's Creek? | aleman
29/11/2016 15:12 | What a bind having to top the boat up with fuel at lunchtime! Looks like I have reduced the size too much! | mrphil |
