Up to recently it has been wet here. It has now turned cold.

On the economy I think we see a slowdown in housing turnover but most other things are bouyant.
I think there are now inflationary expectations in the system. People are expecting rising import prices because of the fall in the £, so they are going out and buying today what may be more expensive tomorrow.
Again if Trump goes on a spending spree this may well boost general demand in the US and perversely boost US imports from the rest of the world, inspite of possible Trump tarriffs and quotas.

For me recent market performance has not been great but no disasters either.
I think we may still be in for a general UK mkt breakout before the end of the spring.

DX. now looking stupid cheap again.

Funny old week, YTD figures now SIPP +10.11%, pot +4.56% and the Virgin ISA +1.35%

Up to the woods tomorrow to stock up on logs. Taking the Leaf and we'll have the air con running so we'll need to stay there long enough to recharge for the journey back home!

None of the usual programs on tonight as it's Children in Need. A good cause but I'm afraid I have to shut it out as I think they do it to death. Everything they do now throughout the year just has to revolve around that and it puts me off, not sure if that makes me a bad person?

Enjoy your weekends.

The car showed only 3°C on the way in this morning although the shed thermometer recorded a low of 4.1°C

We're getting through the logs, that's for sure! Have you organised your log burner yet Aleman?

Skinny, that would be a better bet as at least you have someone you can go back to!

wllm, good luck with the chess tournament, I haven't played in years and got quite in to it in my younger days. My Uncle Fred (Granddad) was some sort of champion and we loved playing chess together when I was a kid!

Thanks MrP - I'm only looking for "markers" as you put it - I'll probably try these from - at least they seem to have some reasonable feedback.

First big snow hits US midwest:

Nothing unusual there but Eurasian winter is still advancing early so Northern hemisphere is snowier than recent years overall:

Lying snow over Scotland led to some pretty cld temperatures last night.

Here's a good tool. Snow predictions. Click 78 hours ahead and see settled snow over the Western UK and Cornwall! Go further ahead and there is significant snow in Spain and Algeria - in November! Mind you, it's just a forecast.

Skinny, that is a ridiculously low price even for Chinese products so I wouldn't expect tremendous quality. We would have trouble making one fitting for that price in this country, let alone a set of 10 with a transformer! I would take the term "ultra bright" with a large dose of salt as it says each fitting has just one SMD LED. To give you an idea, I would expect to see around 36 of those in a typical indoor downlight! For that price, if you are just looking to have some little "marker" lights dotted around your decking then these would probably do the job, but don't expect to be able to see where you are going! You will see the lights but nothing else! I have never heard of that company and they are not "Ltd" so it could just be a bloke working out of his shed. It's just too easy to create a fancy looking website, but £20 isn't much to risk I guess, although just be prepared to chuck them away when they start failing!

Be careful what you wish for, MrP. Some reports suggest the Euro is falling because of fears of potentially very serious fallout from the Italian referendum.

Sleeting on and off this morning. They are probably getting significant snow to mid-altitudes after a couple of inches of snow yesterday on the hilltops. It's the second widespread snow of the year and not even December, although this does not look like lingering either.

Electrocomponents trading is usually a good indicator of general activity in various regions. It seemed to be firing well on all fronts.

I'm having trouble forming a picture of what is happening. Some news is gloomy and some is very good. Mixed might not sound so bad but all was fairly good in 2014 and 2015 so mixed is a deterioration. Normally, things accelerate down quite quickly (while upturns tend to be more slowly ground out). I can't see I am seeing things getting notably worse so I am wondering if we are seeing some unusual kind of modest slowdown thanks to the mining/commodities and engineering recession hitting early and ending before everything else could slowdown significantly. I would imagine the consumer would still dominate so rising interest rates and defaulting should still be the dominant driver - and yet deeriorating news there doesn't seem to be feeding through into retail sales somehow. I still tend to think the downturn will come soon, especially with all the uncertaintly over these EU votes, and yet pockets of strength are confounding my gloomy expecations. What will 2017 bring?

wllm, it was a pleasant surprise to me as I had no idea it was on its way. Still very tempted to put my name down but the other half is keeping me on the side of "sensible" at the moment. I was going to point out its nothing compared to the price of a new boat, but I'm not sure that will help my argument!

Morning All.

Back to my usual 2/7 this week, and I knew one of those!

The £ has continued it's recovery after I have filled up our Euro account on the way up! Just hoping this is a long term recovery and not a short term blip, or we are going to see some hefty price increases.

I had never heard of the I-Pace MrP, what a lovely piece of kit. The F-Pace SUV is really nice too, although I might need to wait on some affordable used models hitting the market.

I'm up +0.915% on the day today (FTSE100 +0.667%).

Best rises: IMI +3.72%, BT.A +3.11% and BLND +2.95%.

Worst falls: INDV -1.74%, LLOY -0.71% and BA. -0.42%.

IMB and MKS went XD today, but both ended within a penny of their previous closing price. BLND reversed yesterday's fall, and vice versa for INDV. Still a lot of volatility about.

+5°C this morning, with some high cloud, By 11 we had rain, but by 3pm it had gone away. The car said +9°C on the way home from Probus. We had a good talk about the future of Naval Aviation. The new carriers and all that. Very interesting.

Turning colder and some really biting rain now.

Better day for the SIPP at +0.40% thanks to CTO, UU. & BP. amongst a few others. Only three fallers in the pot but they worked harder than the gainers resulting in -0.27% RR., LLOY & SGC

The Apprentice tonight, part of which was filmed at the Poole boat show and I'm guessing it was the day we were there as it was pouring with rain! With it being so wet, we had our heads down so wouldn't have noticed a film crew!

EDIT: And of course Close to the Enemy which we will record to enjoy another night!
