Both FTSE 100 and 250 testing support ahead of Italian referendum and Austrian election this weekend. Looks like we could lose 500 points if 6700 goes.

Coldest of the year here last night, -4°C according to the car on the way in this morning.

I see the earlier mild falls have turned into something more severe for the SIPP with BP. unable to hold everything together single handed. The pound getting closer to my 1.20 target though!

Now that the sea between Siberia and Alaska is freezing over, that Deep Siberian cold area is crossing over to Alaska and NW Canada. It is predicted to sweep down over the USA and Mexico next week to add further to the recent widespread snow over the NW 1/3rd of the USA. The Polar Vortex returns.

THey are going to have a hard time spinning 2016 as the hottest year ever when all of Eurasia has had a very cold snowy autumn and North America is also about to turn snowy and bitterly cold early in the season. (And how does Arctic ice recover quickly this autumn if temperatures there are reported to be 10-12C above normal?)

The good news is we get a little warmer as the US plunges into the freezer.

Our low was 4.0C even though it was clear all evening. I see it was chilly down south again!

The consensus seems to be a return to frosts here in a couple of days.

MrP - similar weather - bright and cold, but different shops!

Still can't shake this pesky cough - its been 2 weeks now.

I'm due to go to my annual breakfast tomorrow and I'm not looking forwarded to being on a packed train with an irritating hacking cough.

Morning All.

How was Northampton Skinny?

It's funny we hear it is supposed to be so hard these days to get on to the property ladder and now mortgage rates are rising to these "high" levels but I can remember paying somewhere around 15% back in the early 90's! And my mortgage was around 5 times my annual earnings on a dilapidated terrace house in the middle of Reading with the front door on the pavement and a railway line just outside the back door! Got me on the housing ladder though!

So there should be a lot of new fivers looking for a good home then! ;-)

Still getting profit warnings through from US retailers, not that it means they are all doing badly.

Good Morning.

No day on day figures for my SIPP this week, but YTD looks to have deteriorated further.

I'm not sure how this would work -

Now check out 4.23% on this 30-year mortgage chart. The rate was 3.47% on November 1st so up 0.76% in a month.

So US consumers are facing significantly higher monthly mortgage payments as well as higher gasoline prices. HHhhmm....

UK mortgage rates are beginning to rise - but one sector of the market is going to have to pay 50% more even without rate rises:

BBC radio said the new £10s and £20s will be made the same way.

There are definitely a lot more job losses being announced on this site in November, although more of them seem to be foreign and that could just be a blip. However, although it isn't that clear without doing some significant totting up, I reckon there is more in the UK, too.

I'm down -0.296% on the day today (FTSE100 +0.174%).

Worst falls: S32 -4.69%, INDV -3.06% and IMB -2.65%.

Best rises: RDSB +4.28%, PSON +2.18% and ULVR +2.11%.

Too many of mine fell today. including the miners; only about a quarter rose.

Had a haircut this morning. Probably not the right time, with -8°C first thing, but nothing that a good hat and a good scarf will solve. Very hard on the hands though, even with thick gloves.

-0.3% for me today.

High today 7.1C on a sunny day except for brightness under quite a bit of streaky thin high cloud. Still gaps in it, though, so cooling off a bit.

A healthy looking £1000+ gain for the SIPP at 4pm turned into £15.32 by 4:30 but at least it was a gain! The pot managed +0.13% thanks mainly to RDSB with help from LLOY & FDI

Shopping tonight, a voucher from TSCO so they get the business this week! Need to get our skates on and get back for the conclusion of The Missing!

Not allowed to say the increased minimum wage will have a big effect but of course it will. In any business, a certain percentage of your income will be allocated to wages costs and if all works well you end up with a small amount of profit at the end of the year. Of course you can force that percentage higher but there is only one pot of money so something else will have to give. Sure you can take it out of profit (if there is enough there) but how does the company survive then? In our own business, the cost of the increase in minimum wage plus the cost of auto-enrolment will equal a typical good year of profit by 2020. I'm just glad retirement isn't too far away, it's just getting too hard!

Is lots of job losses in shops the cost of the increased minimum wage? Most retail jobs go at Christmas. They hang on with fingers crossed when business is quiet and then throw in the towel when Christmas is weak. There is less to see at those shops in Leeds and Southport, now, so I am less likely to browse the shops that remain. I think the swing online is now really changing the high street in a fundamental way. It will affect all shops as footfall reduces. Councils will lose parking revenues, as well.

Aleman, I read that the high street didn't do as well on Black Friday as they're losing out to online. Fareham is now charity shops or coffee shops which I think is becoming a common theme along high streets across the country. We have taken that choice by going online but I think "we" are going to feel a lot poorer for it in the long run. I really dislike the way it's going, and all this "must have it now" mentality. We ordered some charity cards and other bits from RSPB and even they delivered on Sunday! Why? Quite happy to wait a couple of days.

Venison casserole with red wine for dinner at lunchtime, cooked totally on the log burner this morning. Absolutely delicious and no oven required!
