I'm just asking a question as IQE already involved with graphene research in UHF applications -

I attended the Total Market event in the City yesterday evening and apart from meeting Neil for the first time I was also pleased to meet several others who post on this board.

The event has been accuratly reported on by Maisto and others but I would just like to comment a bit further on the Chinese deal. I was concerned as to whether it was possible to sign a deal prior to Brexit as we keep being told that we cannot sign trade deals with other countries until after we've left the EU. Neil clarified this for me and pointed out that this did not apply to deals between companies, only to tade deals between countries. He then went on to say however, that VRS will need a licence from the DIT before they can actually sign a deal in china. The main reason for this, apart from protecting a British companys' IP, was to ensure that technology that might be used to adversly effect the security of the UK will not be permitted to leave the UK. As Maisto pointed out, this is one of the reasons for the delay. Fortunately we have the DIT on board to ensure we are compliant.

Re that article on Graphene and G5/IoT, can you think of a Cardiff based semi-conductor company that would - possibly - be most interested in taking that further, perhaps even a collaboration?

Spike - fully agreed. Also don't think Neill would have mentioned it if he hadn't already started it and was confident over the upgrades.

Re Neill's Tesla,

If you own a battery company with incredible technology that you know works, but hasn't yet reached market, what could possibly be a better advert than taking an iconic leading edge EV and saying look, I can do another two hundred miles, and - watch this - charge it back up in 5 minutes ;0)

The media would possibly / probably be all over it.

We should never forget just how smart Neill is (IMO).

Best wishes - Spike

"As conventional semiconductor technologies are approaching their physical limitations we need to explore entirely new technologies to realise our most ambitious visions of a future networked global society," explains Wolfgang Templ, Department Head of Transceiver Research at Nokia Bell Labs in Germany, which is a Graphene Flagship partner. "Graphene promises a significant step in performance of key components for optical and radio communications beyond the performance limits of today's conventional semiconductor-based component technologies." Paola Galli, Nokia IP and Optical networks Member of Technical Staff, agrees: "Graphene photonics offer a combination of advantages to become the game changer. We need to explore new materials to go beyond the limits of current technologies and meet the capacity needs of future networks."

""Graphene integrated in a photonic circuit is a low cost, scalable technology that can operate fibre links at a very high data rates," said Marco Romagnoli, from Graphene Flagship partner CNIT, the National Interuniversity Consortium for Telecommunications in Italy."

"Antonio D'Errico from Graphene Flagship partner Ericsson Research explains how "graphene for photonics has the potential to change the perspective of information and communications technology in a disruptive way." "This paper published on Nature Reviews Materials explains how to enable new feature rich optical networks. I am pleased to say that this fundamental information is now available to anyone interested around the globe,"

"Daniel Neumaier from Graphene Flagship partner AMO GmbH, also leader of the Graphene Flagship Division on Electronics and Photonics Integration, adds: "Optical communication links will become more and more important in 5G for supporting the required high data rates at all nodes. Graphene-based optical components integrated on a silicon platform will be able to deliver both increased performance and a low-cost production process, thus are expected to become key components in the 5G era."

"This paper makes a clear case of why an integrated approach of graphene and silicon-based photonics can meet and surpass the foreseeable requirements of the ever-increasing data rates in future telecom systems," says Andrea C. Ferrari, professor at the University of Cambridge, Science and Technology Officer of the Graphene Flagship and Chair of its Management Panel. "The advent of the Internet of Things and the 5G era represent unique opportunities for graphene to demonstrate its ultimate potential,"

For those who don't already know, Andrea Ferrari is Technology Advisor to Versarien's subsidiary Cambridge Graphene Ltd.

"..it is normal to get a slight lag after summer.." (NR tweet re collaborations)

A lag in what? The number of new collabs occurring? Or in progress on existing collabs? Why is that when everybody is in a race?

We haven't finished with looking for partners in verticals not already covered. Our strategy is to work with the best one we can, demonstrate and prove on a non-exclusive basis through a collaboration and then target the market. Our process is enquiry,NDA, Collab, order

Interesting few days & definitely a good time to try & tune out & let the day job take over - Most interesting previous unknown fact to emerge for me is that VRS dependant on Govt license to proceed in China - Some downside to this ( Political considerations in the mix) but mostly very positive - The obvious scale & therefore potential profitability of matters in hand, Full UK Govt backing & support behind IP protection & the obviously transparent realism & genuineness of the company`s aspirations

The Tesla in the company car park a great way to help focus minds & enthuse all - So many aspects of this cutting edge EV that can be enhanced/improved with VRS products
