Lord gnome, on the scale these idiots are talking about, even with the polish and Germany we would still be short of labour.and to add with the UK importing bricks from Holland in the 80's boom still short.

"A total of 10.5 percent of the new build homes sold in 2014 were bought by overseas investors, 13.1 percent of the 2015 sales and 17.9 percent of the 2016 sales."

Could result in a glut of new builds on the market, unless prices reduced..

It's ok Martyn9. If the LibDems do get into power they will cancel Brexit so they can import all the Polish builders they need to build their castles in the sky.

I see Boris is suggesting an extra 3% stamp duty levy on all foreign buyers of property, once the UK has left the EU.
Does anyone know the percentage of current foreign buyers of new builds?

The Labour Manifesto is sheer fantasy. They know the game is up and they will be hammered in the election. All the promises and £85 billion cost is just to try and sway enough mugs to believe his promises to hang on by the finger tips to hold a few seats to dilute Conservative majority. How any person with a grain of intelligence could forget the last three year performance of Labour front bench and the rest of the party is beyond me.

Affordable to me would be less than 100k , Cant see you building a house for much less than 200k that to me is not affordable doesn't matter which party makes the promise none of there targets are achievable

As a Labour supporter it does seem Labour's plan is too ambitious (need to have a slower start). But I applaud the building of truly affordable rentable homes. Tories have a target but it will leave to market forces. I also understand they might relax mortgage lending rules. A clear choice, but probably a good plan would be a mix of both policies.

@jugears, totally agree that the labour manifesto on housing is a total non starter. We know that, we have been aware of labour situation in the industry for years. The challenge is making everyone aware of what rubbish it is purely on a logistical level let alone the economic one. Many people particularly those that are looking for homes may think it is a wonderful idea. I hope the Conservatives are up to the challenge of getting the country to appreciate what nonsense it is.

Apprenticeship numbers have been dropping for years young people are not interested in the building industry anymore . It would take years to train enough people to build these houses & the uk does not have years & a lot of foreign labour have left the uk,not only that social housing is low margin work & not many companies will get involved with that & very few if any house builders will, they only do now to enable them to be able to build large private estates
I afraid Mr Corbyn would need to be in power for at least 15 years for any of his ideas to come in to fruition. I cant quite see where he will get the power from to override private investors with his plans to privatise certain industries Imo it could take many years & a substantial amount of Money. My Vote will be with Boris, not bothered about any of his policies just leaving the EU will satisfy me

I assume that all of these houses that are to be built are for the people that are here already, if so where are the millions that are coming in to build them going to live,?

Well we can rule out Corbyn's 150000 houses a year for 5 years at cost of 75 billion, my calculations would be nearer 112 billion, big difference & that's assuming you could by the land & build for 150k.
