11/3/2020 17:13 | Worth noting the Royal Mail "defined benefit" pension plans post IPO were closed to future accruals from March 2018. November 2019 the pension surplus was £2.97 billion, almost twice the current value of the company The RM pension trustee invests the majority of pension funds in fixed interest securities eg. government long term gilts to match liabilities With today's announcement by the Bank of England to reduce the bank base rate to 0.25% and with 10year gilts appreciating to yield only 0.28% today, suffice to say that the RM Defined benefit pension scheme is in rude health and probably the best funded private pension scheme in the UK | muffinhead

06/3/2020 14:29 | With IR35 the industry will find itself with substantial extra costs. Employers NI, all the vans now on the company books along with the insurance, sick pay, holiday pay, and the cost of covering for when a driver is away sick or on holiday. Parcel costs will rise across the board, it could be a chance to improve margins? Either that, or some participants in the market will collude and share drivers, so that the driver can remain 'self employed', as he can claim more than one customer? I doubt the public will notice, but I learnt this the other day from a self employed HGV driver, and he is packing it in as he wants flexible working and not being tied down to one company. | lefrene

06/3/2020 14:16 | l Good ost, I feel this will support PF better as alot of the others we cease to trade I would have thought. Any news of the proposed outcome of the vote yet? tia | srpactive
06/3/2020 14:05 | The new tax rules that work against 'captive' self employed persons is going to hit the whole van delivery industry, since so many van drivers operate as a captive 'self employed' person. ie, they have to provide a modern liveried van and work on a per parcel/mileage basis. I know Parcel Force employs a lot of people on this basis, and the new rules will mean that these people will have to be taken back on as full employees with the associate costs and benefits. I guess as it will affect the whole industry it shouldn't put parcel Force at an undue disadvantage. | lefrene
