Enjoy D.F. Take warm clothes since next week looks chilly.

Apparent sales of placing shares in the last half-hour at SOS took the shine off my lot. -0.2%. YTD +5.6%.

Rising US Treasury yields this week look likely to push up the average US mortgage rate again. Expect 6.40-6.45% to be announced next week, compared to 3.92% one year and one week ago. I know from my sister's activity in Texas that the market there is in a bad way. Recent sharp mortgage rate rises will not help!

Been shopping at Morrisons. A few price rises and a few decreases. The frozen pizzas we buy on odd occasions (and add healthier toppings to) were the lowest price for several years - they actually seemed too cheap. (Why do supermarkets play with pricing so much?) I noticed again that I'm buying some new larger pack sizes at significantly lower unit pricing while not removing expensive smaller old pack sizes. If inflation takes the new sizes into account, CPI will be lower. If it goes only on old sizes, CPI will read slightly higher than the practical reality. Who decides?

Not just warm at lunchtime today as Spring shoved Winter aside. The wind subsided and hazy sun was enough for it to feel pleasant for a good few hours. 13.0C after 9.8C. Winter cherries, magnolias, crocuses and daffodils are starting to bloom. I note our week to week heating bills look to be about to switch from deficit expanding to surplus expanding (relative to our monthly payments). We've only built up a deficit of about £300 over winter so we'll probably be in credit again by the end of May without increasing payments to account for Ukraine, after increasing them a year which eliminated a modest deficit and moved us slightly into credit in the autumn.

Have a good weekend, everyone.

5/7 on the quiz, might have been 6/7 had I chosen my first thoughts on one.

I'm down -0.031% on the day today (FTSE100 -0.102%), up +1.38% on the weekm (FTSE100 +1.55%) and up +7.50% YTD (FTSE100 +7.42% and HIX +8.00%).

Worst falls: S32 -4.29%, LLOY -3.83% and WDS -3.31%.

Best rises: SGRO +3.59%, IMB +2.96% and NG. +2.05%.

Segro rose on its full year results, S32 gave up more than yesterday's gain, while IMB did the reverse.

We are off on a cruise to the top of Norway tomorrow, hoping to see the Northern Lights. Back in a fortnight. Keep the market stirring, enjoy life in then meantime.

Portfolio -0.26% ... main fallers AAL, BP, MKS and WEIR...couple of gainers IMB , AZN and BATS

+1.26% for the week , making +5.13% YTD

Another cloudy , mild day, very breezy 14C. Cleared up a fair few leaves, not sure where they'd blown in from.

QPR to receive a good hiding at Middlesbrough tomorrow. We're going on a guided walk around the Waterloo area tomorrow ( all to do with spies and assassinations) with some excellent fish and chips at a restaurant near to the station before we start. Been there several times.

Hike on sunday.

Good weekend everyone.

Another duff day for me today - smaller companies trust and UPGS again being the biggest - add in the dilution due to my recent purchases and my YTD has fallen somewhat to +6.0% Still better than last year though.

US corporate news generally not quite as bad as last week, I think, but still not good. 3 announcements of job losses in last 24 hours but maybe only 10-12 this week versus pushing 20 last week (though I think fewer reporting). Further downward revisions in US earnings will come.

New 15-month lows for gas this afternoon with EU and UK down about 7% today. Scaremongering about a Beast from the East seems to be backing off to just some chilly nights next week and slowly getting milder into March. Chilly nights could mean some pleasant lunchtimes!

Zacks also show S&P500 earnings continuing to deteriorate. FY2023 edged into negative territory but there was an oddly sharp deterioration in Q2 forecasts to -6.1%. It was +2.1% two weeks ago.

That sounds more than reasonable MrP - good luck with getting a 'gesture'.

Its been quite gusty here at times - I've had to retrieve a table cover and a water can that got got caught earlier.

I bought some NWG earlier @279 as a short term trade, but may well hold them.

The temperature didn't drop below double figures last night which is a bit crazy for this time of year. No sign of much more than a gentle breeze at the moment so we're heading down to the marina for lunch on board. I have suggested to the marina manager they may want to consider offering a gesture against next years fees, bearing in mind I am still suffering from the effects of the fall on their slippery pontoon. He has suggested we discuss over a coffee so at least that's something I guess! I'm not looking to take it any further but it doesn't seem right I am suffering due to their failure to keep the pontoons clean and all they did was quickly clean them after I slipped. I think if I'm paying £8K to park the boat, the least they can do is make sure I can safely get on it!

Had a gusty spell where it probably hit 50mph but calmed again now.

EU and UK gas -5% to new 15-month lows. When do our bills go down? Do we get tax cuts?

Good morning. It's breezy here, too, but no sign of predicted gales. (15mph gusting to 35mph?) It actually goes completely calm at times. Also, unusually, it's warmer than predicted at 12.9C currently.

Edit - wind map says recent gusts 39mph to 63mph across Yorkshire. I'm still pretty sure we've seen no higher than 40mph here this morning. You can almost measure wind speed by how far our Lombardies bend and they are not doing much at the moment

Here's a couple of interesting stats. UK fuel imports rose £63.6bn last year. Fuel exports rose £27.4bn. So, the deficit rose ££36.2bn, mostly due to rising prices. UK GDP will be about £2500bn so rising energy prices knocked about 1.45% off 2022 GDP. A big chunk of that should reverse this year if fuel prices maintain their recent trend, making it harder for GDP to turn negative even if consumers slow down. Strange we never got that mentioned in exaggerated reports about how badly the UK has been doing versus other G7 nations. (Despite this, I still expect GDP will turn negative on current very tight monetary policy.)

I'm up +0.169% on the day today (FTSE100 +0.184%).

Best rises: BT.A +2.86%, S32 +2.49% and VOD +2.32%.

Worst falls: IMB -3.6% XD, AZN -1.78% and UU. -1.52%.

Despite a reduced interim, S32 rose on the results. Both BP. and SHEL went XD today, yet rose considerably.

A good talk at Probus from a former submarine commander. Fascinating history.

Drizzle for much of the day.
