06/2/2023 11:58 | That sounds bad, Skinny. I know slipped discs can generally be fixed to some degree in the short term though longer term issues can still linger. I hope she gets a satisfactory restitution and quickly. Enjoy your extra time with the grandkids! I've already been pot-hole dodging to get groceries at Morrisons. I was a bit shocked that a small bottle of toasted sesame oil was £4.25. I think it was £2.50 last time I bought some though that was ages ago. I noted a couple of stealth price reductions through bigger multipacks (muesli bars) and new ranges to try (crisps). I still find it really odd I have not had two biweekly back-to-back shops over £100, that I've been threatening for a few years, when the media are screaming food inflation is nearly 20% over 12 months. Mine definitely has not been that severe, though we can afford more premium stuff. It feels more like 10% or so - and I now think it might have turned marginally negative on a month-to-month basis Coming back, I noticed a cat looking like it might cross a slowish section of a busy road. In my rear view mirror, I saw it force an HGV into an emergency stop and, in the panic to get away from that, it then get rolled under a car going the other way. It ran away bouncing frantical around so I presume it was not seriously injured but I really think we need to do something about this. Maybe cats should be chipped and insured at the very least to cover the increasing number of people on cycles and scooters who won't cope with the resultant minor impacts quite as well. I suppose it would not work if that cat does a runner, though. I might add that I'm in favour of dog licences that need some training input, too. People seem ignorant of laws about leads. Somebody has just posted that the SOS chairman that has died was only 55. It does not say on the website but looks about right from the photo. My sister's bridesmaid from her wedding a long time ago died last week, also 55. I don't know if it's just bad luck but there seems to be an unusual number of people dying in their 50s just lately that I'm aware of. If the B of E projects inflation is going to be under 1% in two years time (more than 1% too low) , why are they thinking of raising rates to push it further below target in future? | aleman
06/2/2023 11:20 | Skinny, just seen your earlier post. Very best wishes for your daughter's recovery, sounds very nasty. Mr P , good to get a job well done. | philanderer
06/2/2023 11:15 | Curry's have just delivered and installed the new washing machine and taken the old one away. All went smoothly and the two guys were great so a big thumbs up to Curry's. | mrphil

06/2/2023 10:38 | Watford started off brightly but failed to hang on to a 2-0 lead. Has to be said it looked like some poor refereeing cost us - particularly a soft penalty. Won't mention the rugby. Played a bit of mens tennis against our "A" side last night until the courts got icy. Red start this morning. Funny how being a fan is pretty similar to being a shareholder. A few good results/increases makes you believe you are going to be promoted/millionaire - then a few bad days and you will be relegated/poor house forever. Dr B - from the poor house. Hope the chaos and your daughter improve skinny. | dr biotech
06/2/2023 10:38 | Oh dear Skinny, your poor daughter, hope she recovers soon. Sounds like you have a hectic few days ahead! | mrphil
06/2/2023 10:36 | Good Morning. Lovely picture MrP. A Hectic weekend for us as one of our daughters managed to slip a disk on Thursday and was taken to hospital in the early hours as she couldn't move and had lost control of her bladder. She has 6 month old twins and two older sons - the latter have been with us all weekend and I've had a 50 mile round trip this morning on their school runs. We're just trying to organise the rest of the week - our trip to Kew on Wednesday is looking very doubtful! | skinny
06/2/2023 10:01 | Thanks Aleman, starting to ease off a bit this morning. Strangely I am quietly confident about this year for our business, but then we have started off on a very positive note and I do appreciate things could take a turn for the worse with these rising interest rates. I don't see much sign of them reducing anytime soon with all these strikes going on and the pressure that higher wages will put on inflation. Where these people think the money will come from beats me, but then I guess they couldn't care less as long as they get more in their own pockets. What they are really saying is that money should be taken out of the pockets of those on minimum wage just so they can have a bit more. Looks like we are heading for another down day. | mrphil
06/2/2023 09:39 | Factset's weekly report has the S&P500 forward p/e at 18.4. In the last year share prices have risen as earnings forecasts have fallen and the market would have to fall by about 15% to bring them back into line. In the meanwhile, forecasts continue to fall and central banks threaten more rate rises. Given concerns in the market about a possible economic slowdown or recession, have analysts lowered EPS estimates more than normal for S&P 500 companies for the first quarter? The answer is yes. During the month of January, analysts lowered EPS estimates for the first quarter by a larger margin than average. The Q1 bottom-up EPS estimate (which is an aggregation of the median EPS estimates for Q1 for all the companies in the index) decreased by 3.3% (to $52.41 from $54.20) from December 31 to January 31. In a typical quarter, analysts usually reduce earnings estimates during the first month of a quarter. During the past five years (20 quarters), the average decline in the bottom-up EPS estimate during the first month of a quarter has been 1.5%. During the past ten years, (40 quarters), the average decline in the bottom-up EPS estimate during the first month of a quarter has been 1.8%. During the past fifteen years, (60 quarters), the average decline in the bottom-up EPS estimate during the first month of a quarter has been 2.2%. During the past 20 years (80 quarters), the average decline in the bottom-up EPS estimate during the first month of a quarter has been 1.7%. Thus, the decline in the bottom-up EPS estimate recorded during the first month of the first quarter was larger than the 5-year average, the 10-year average, the 15-year average, and the 20-year average. At this point in time, 43 companies in the index have issued EPS guidance for Q1 2023. Of these 43 companies, 37 have issued negative EPS guidance and 6 have issued positive EPS guidance. | aleman
06/2/2023 08:57 | Oh my fingers hurt. Even with the sun out and gloves on, that was a shock. I've just got back in and it's only 14.1C in the house despite the central heating being on for a little over an hour earlier. The sun is just starting warm it up now even if it did not warm me up on the school run. I wish the weather would make it's mind up which season it wants to be! A hot coffee needed!! Hope the back recovers quickly, MRP. | aleman
