07/2/2023 17:14 | My lot did OK at +0.49% thanks largely to BP. but a good showing also from LLOY & AFC. Awful scenes from Turkey & Syria, should we have been more prepared? | mrphil
07/2/2023 17:05 | Portfolio -0.32% saved by BP from a much worse number...AAL and NICL the other main risers. Fallers PZC, DGE, VSVS, WIX and BAG. Cold and sunny this afternoon after the mist was burned off 6C. Tragic coverage coming out of Turkey and Syria. | philanderer
07/2/2023 16:56 | -0.24% folio, [FTSE All-Share +0.11%] XLM, WDS, the only material gainers. HICL & PLUS succumbing to profit taking I expect. Another wall to wall day -2C to 9C, feeling the sun's warmth. Wish your family well Skinny. | blueliner
07/2/2023 16:55 | Not a mixed bag for a change. In fact, A similar pattern seen in them all. Up a bit or not early on and then all fell away. -0.6%. A mostly bright day but only a little sun so felt chillier. 9.8C after -1.1C. | aleman
07/2/2023 14:17 | Yes it's a combination of the builders obviously not having a spirit level when they fitted everything and then us getting a ceramic tiled floor fitted later on. I reckon we probably originally had about 860mm dropping to 850mm along the length of the worktop but then once we added ceramic tiles we're nearer 850mm dropping to 840mm which gave us limited choice of machines. The one we have chosen is 840mm so it was cutting it a bit fine! I can gain a few millimetres at one end where it meets the wall and I'm hoping that might be enough. | mrphil
07/2/2023 11:54 | Ah, sounds a very tight fit. I had a fair bit of space to play with. Tricky one. | philanderer
07/2/2023 11:44 | phil, my understanding is that they lowered all the feet as much as possible to get it to fit under the worktop and it's virtually touching on one side so there's limited options! My conscience made me sell 1/3 of my BP. last September but I kept the rest on the basis they were investing heavily in renewables. That seems to be changing! | mrphil
07/2/2023 11:37 | Mr P we had exactly that problem with ours. Managed to get a thin piece of plywood under the corner to level it off. Been fine since. | philanderer
07/2/2023 11:33 | Morning All. Having a bit of an issue with the new washing machine which seems to be due to our lack of space under the worktop so the guys weren't able to get it completely level which is causing it to go a bit mad when on a spin cycle. I have a horrible feeling we are in for a major rework if the worktop needs raising so I may need to think of a temporary solution such as chopping away part of the underside of the worktop to gain the few millimetres needed. Not something I would relish with my back not fully recovered from the weekend antics! BP. helping my lot to a positive figure so far today, and I see AFC is continuing it's recent recovery. | mrphil
07/2/2023 10:46 | Morning everyone. Cold and misty here at the moment. Cold one last night, required pyjamas and a hot water bottle. BP just about keeping the portfolio flat. | philanderer
07/2/2023 10:37 | Still no snow to speak of this winter here. It looks like it's been everywhere else in January. Sahara - again. It's snowed there in 5 of the last 7 winters after, allegedly, 37 years without. | aleman
07/2/2023 10:25 | Morning. After a frosty and misty start now brilliant sunshine, but still only just above freezing. With one large riser BP and one faller PLUS which cancel each other out portfolio is just about blue with no large swings either way in the remaining shares, | malcolm caton
07/2/2023 09:37 | Yardeni's US aggregate consensus earnings forecasts continue to plummet. Forward P/E ratios continue to rise as earnings forecasts fall. If typical historic bottom of recession P/Es are achieved, then the S&P500 could fall about 50% from here and the mids and small caps about 1/3rd. 07/2/2023 09:20 | Blanchflower, who served on the Bank’s monetary policy committee between 2006 and 2009 (during the financial crisis), says policymakers should have cut rates last week, rather than raising them to 4%. He explains: As I sat at the Bank of England, my job was to think about what inflation was going to be at about 18 months to two years down the road. And you change rates now because it takes time to have an effect. “What people should see is a collapsing housing market, a slowing economy and the reason is that these interest rate hikes that have been going crazily haven’t actually impacted the economy yet.” The B of E's own forecast is CPI falling to under 1% at the end of 2023 - under target. | aleman
07/2/2023 04:58 | Good Morning. Again, thanks for your thoughts / comments. Dr Bio, I'm very glad it worked out for them, but like you, I've lost on many bios over the years, so to my mind, your advice was very well founded - I'd add UK small miners, UK tech......... DF, good news! On what seems like trivia compared to what's happening globally, I finished down 0.59%. | skinny
07/2/2023 00:25 | Dr B , that's quite a story, pleased to hear it worked out financially for them. DF, very well done on clearing that up. | philanderer
06/2/2023 20:51 | Skinny, Mrs wllmherk says it's a Cauda equina, a medical emergency so it's good she was taken to the hospital quickly. wllm :) | wllmherk
06/2/2023 20:48 | We certainly didn’t fall out over it. I knew they had invested a lot at the time but didn’t know he’d averaged down too. Broke all the sensible rules of investing, one high risk stock with money you cant afford to lose. Still has way too much in there but good luck to them. Good stuff DF. Not quite sure if you mean infection or inflammation. I get inflation when I can’t play tennis and eat too much 😀 | dr biotech
06/2/2023 19:56 | DF, you sound a remarkable individual :) wllm | wllmherk
06/2/2023 19:26 | I'm down -0.768% on the day today (FTSE100 -0.824%). Worst falls: BT.A -3.19%, TW. -2.50% and BLND -2.36%. Best rises: TATE +1.55%^, GSK +1.49% and NG. +0.58%. Pharma among the few risers today. Insurers down but Admiral rose. Had my appointment with the dermatologist this morning. Apologised for the condition having cured itself, but she said it was a tribute to what the 89 year old human body can do to fend off inflation. DF | deanforester
06/2/2023 19:22 | Skinny - Sorry to hear about your daughters back injury. Hope she makes a speedy recovery. Dr B - your advice seemed sound.. not sure I'd put all eggs in one basket but glad it worked in there favour. Talking backs I've struggled recently.. hot poker in between shoulder blades and stiff neck/shoulder feels tight and feel I need to stretch all the time.. had ten sessions physio on it over pandemic as got worse sitting kitchen table laptop or inactive being out of routine during that time and still not right.. also now pain under left ribs.. so thinking GP contact is needed but I'm one of those that really can be bothered with the waiting and hassles.. I've private health care via work but always feel they offer physio as first course.. I'd rather a quick scan to check all is in order than go through that malarkey again. Still haven't treated myself to new pillows either.. on my to-do list! Wish I'd listen to people when they say sit up straight! | carpingtris
06/2/2023 18:19 | They say every cloud has a silver lining, Dr Bio. That's a big silver lining but, sadly, it's a very big cloud. I suspect your advice was probably very reasonable and hope it has not soured your relationship with them. | aleman
06/2/2023 18:03 | Dramatic story DrB, glad they got some positive out of it! | mrphil
06/2/2023 17:44 | Poor day for me -0.6% No news or big changes, just more down than up. Met up with my brother in law at the weekend at a relatives 50th. 10 years ago they adopted a couple of kids - 2 & 6months at the time. After a few months of slow development they had the youngest test for various ailments and discovered she has Rett Syndrome, which is an awful diagnosis. From 18months onwards the kids starts to regress and lose the power of speech (if they had it) and other life skills. On a 1-100 scale of disability I'd put it at 95%. Wheelchair, needs feeding through a tube, etc. For them its meant a lifetime of care which they have dealt with admirably. About 7 years ago they found a company (neuren, its aussie listed) that was working on a treatment for Retts and a related condition called fragile X. They wanted to invest in it and I said to avoid biotechs, or invest a small amount as I've had my fingers and arms burned many times with them. So they ignored me, and put in their entire life savings, around £40k. They bought around $1.20 Last month they sold a load at $9. Paid off the mortgage and changed to working 3 days a week. Grateful for my advice (not). Funny how many times you read about people losing entire fortunes, but there are winners too. They still hold way too many, but great to see them rewarded for their time and investment in their adopted daughter. | dr biotech |
