Sorry to hear that Mr P. Downhill mountain biking is a fast growing sport in Canada and my son is addicted. It is worrisome. Rocks are a lot less forgiving than snow.

With my son resident in Canada I have more than a passing interest in the Canadian housing market. Fortunately where he lives on the Western edge of the Rockies prices are more reasonable and cheaper than most parts of UK.It does seem absurd given the vast size of the country ( British Columbia alone is bigger than the EU!) and relatively low population together with relatively low construction costs that they can generate a housing boom, ( Mr Carneys legacy!!)but I guess its concentrated in the big cities and fuelled by Chinese money. Big time bust coming I think.

Morning All.

Had some terrible news about a business acquaintance who managed to kill himself riding his mountain bike over the weekend. Don't have the full story but he was off-road at the time, came off and broke his neck. A stark warning for those of us that do enjoy a cycle ride, our bodies aren't as tough as we think!

Thanks, kiwi. That's useful to know.

Safestyle report volatile demand in recent weeks but Headlam seem steady. Royal Mail letter volume fall of 6% seems a bit steep, though it's doing fine elsewhere.

Aleman, there are probably two parts to the Canadian housing 'bust'

Firstly, and uniquely, the recent announcements of a 15% tax which will have to be paid by foreign buyers of housing property in both Toronto and Vancouver.

Secondly, and one which is thankfully also starting to affect prices here and Aus, is the clamp down by the Chinese government on the movement of money abroad.

Perhaps the clampdown on currency movement is also affecting parts of the London housing market too?

+0.84% buoyed by the miners. VED and KAZ were fighting for the top spot but VED won out in the end. The few fallers I have are all very modest, SFR takes the wooden spoon but nothing to keep me awake tonight.

Thank you for your kind words MrPhil. My daughter has already had her 15 minutes, being lucky enough to perform at Her Majesty's theatre on Haymarket. My proudest moment in her 'career' so far. The stage is where her heart lies but if I am honest I would prefer she chose a more academic career with a greater chance of success. Thankfully she is very sensible and is pursuing both, taking additional GCSE's in her lunchtime to give herself every chance. :-)

I was greeted by Morris Dancers on my cycle ride tonight. A most unexpected pleasure which tempted me to stop off for a drink. Clearly the landlord's plan bore fruit as there was quite a crowd. My problem was an absence of bike lights and it was getting quite dark by the time I arrived home. A lesson learned for next time.

+0.27%, mixed day for the Folio, IMB plus some of the smaller caps pulling me back amongst a fair scattering of red. [FTSE250 +0.58%].

Highest value risers : CLIG +2.1%, BLT +1.3%, LLPC +1%, HSD +2.4%, PFC +2.4%.

Worst value fallers : MCL -2.5%, IGR -1.1%, IMB -1.2%, VANL -5.2%, BGO -1.1%.

Temp 25C, waves of those tiny black flies coming off the fields today.

I'm up +0.597% on the day today (FTSE100 +0.349%) thanks to the CPG special dividend paid today.

Best rises: CLLN +19.15%, S32 +4.04% and IMI +2.22%.

Worst falls: INDV -1.93%, IMB -1.63% and PSON -0.63%.

Predictable result in the test at Trent Bridge. At least the agony wasn't drawn out to tomorrow. We need some different batsmen at 2 and 3.

CLLN had a good rise today, after announcing that it has won two HS2 contracts worth about £2Bn, with its partners. So has BBY.

We seem to be surrounded by temporary traffic lights. I went out this moning and encountered two sets, so came back the other route, only to find another set on that one. Fortunately I arrived home just as the dust cart was there, so I avoided missing that in the narrowest part of our lane.

My SIPP finished up 0.70%.

It felt warmer than the indicated 27°C - the watering beckons - possibly after a swift pint at the local!

Very pleased with a steady +0.50% for the SIPP today with almost everything rising a little bit. Notable performers were BP., BRCI & SSE. Only the tiniest of gains for the pot as AMS fell back slightly.

Aleman, agree regarding those vapour trails, so many times you look up and the only "cloud" has been formed by those. I remember when all the flights were cancelled due to the ash clouds, I don't think I have ever seen so many true clear blue skies!

Conclusion of Fearless tonight, clashing with Ripper Street. Getting behind with tv as we've been busy doing other things. Didn't even get back to see Poldark last night as we were still washing the boat at 9:30!

+0.9%. A good day. Blue everywhere.

A bad day for the fruit. The kids have been at the raspberries and the strawberries I left on this morning to pick this afternoon are swarming with fruit flies. Advice welcome - for the flies, not the kids!

Wall to wall sunshine with wispy high cloud building which looks to be all vapour trails. (Why do climate scientists never talk about all this artificial cloud we make?) 26.7C after 11.2C..

Very well so far although I've only covered @500 miles - the one thing that Shadowside (I think) mentioned is that with the DSG box, unlike a normal auto box, reverse is taken up quite sharply - which takes a bit of getting used to if you are stationary and want to reverse a couple of feet or less.

Indeed MrP not for widows and orphans, bought some CNCT which a few of you hold, seems a bit volatile of late but, couldn't find any reason for recent sell off not sure if anyone can enlighten me ?
I like the dividend yield if sustainable, but, does seem a bit indebted. It was a toss up between CNCT and BON, BON has a very clean balance sheet, but, the 4% spread on the shares and being a fashion retailer put me off.
Good job I'm back to work tomorrow as I've a tendency to sit and trade shares if left to my own devices :)

How is the Ateca going Skinny ? I traded in my wife's BMW 1 series last week, bought from new and nothing but problems with it, thought BMW's were meant to be reliable ! Traded in for LEXUS IS300h with 29,000 miles on the clock. First impressions are favourable.

I considered it sub-60p, too.

UK [business] insolvencies have been rising since Q3 of 2016 and are forecast to increase 6% this year and 8% next year. Business failures are expected to be concentrated in consumer-facing sectors like retail and accommodation and those that depend on imported materials like construction.

Irish start-ups are easing and insolvencies are up 13% in H1.

I did MrP, bought at 56p on Friday but, sold way too early today at 62p. If only I had held could have made a few thousand instead of a few hundred :(

Morning All.

Yes well done Federer. Haven't watched it yet but dounds a bit one-sided, although probably not as much so as the ladies doubles!

freddie, have to agree with you to a certain extent, I really don't think the answer is to just ban every day things because they are being used by a small number of horrible people. Are we going to ban cars and vans because some nasty people use them as weapons?

Glad to see CTO have already recovered £1.43M from the recent fraud activity.

I haven't spotted any bad news this morning. I note Weir say their market has been stronger than expected. That may bode well for a number of engineers.
