Bit of a turnaround yesterday.

Perhaps some of Wetherspoons 250 new pubs could be bought from MARS !

Oriel Securities - 24/11/09:

At the time of the rights issue in June, Marston's indicated that it would pay a final dividend of 3.7p. This dividend is expected to be paid in January and last year the shares were marked ex-dividend on 17 December.

On the basis that the ratio between the interim and final dividend is likely to be maintained at a ratio of 36:64 we expect the total dividend for 2009/10 to be 5.8p and on our earnings forecasts this dividend should be covered 1.7 times.

In the medium term the group's dividend policy is to target a cover level of around two times although the level of cover in any one year may vary. On our forecasts the dividend is likely to be flat in 2010/11 but a modest increase looks likely in 2011/12 which would still enable a dividend cover of 2.0 times to be achieved in that year.

Following the recent share price weakness the shares yield 6.8% for 2009/10 and in the very short term the yield is 4.4% on the basis of the final dividend alone.

Numis - 23/11/09:

We believe Marston's shares are now oversold and that the 7% dividend yield should act as a support. This is based on our belief that the dividend should be underpinned by a return to earnings growth in 2011E, for which the company has the right strategy and necessary financial resource. Over the long-term, this could result in the shares recovering back towards the NAV of 147p/share.

LOL

During my apprenticeship as a beer monster with hollow legs in the 1970s, I lived at the ancestoral home which was near Blandord Forum in Dorset, where probably half of the pubs were tied to Hall and Woodhouse (A family owned brewery and pub chain)

I have to say that their larger (it was called Brock in the 1970s) tasted a bit like floodwater, The brewery was (and still is) adjacent to the river Stour which may may had something to do with it. Hall and Woodhouse have since tried to reinvent their larger and they now call it HB, I still call it Brock, it tastes just the same!

Stab in the dark here - they just might have insurance !

This also could be a great way to cut costs and reorganise

"We are thinking very hard at the moment about brewing beers to the taste of customers from the Lake District.

"There are some distinctive flavours that customers in the Lake District enjoy. We are looking at how we can supply beers that meet their flavour needs, but they wouldn't be called Jenning's beers."

That'll be Marstons 'Floodwater', then.

8-)

I have bought a few of these. I like the idea that the business is contracting giving Marstons a bigger slice of the market.

Fell to my buying range and I do like the dividend.

Good results from Fullers today and Youngs yesterday (both operate a similar model to Marstons, albeit they are both more SE/London centic), so I'm not sure why the Marstons share price is such a laggard

Fullers results:

Price seems skittish considering the buy side volume,
it would be a great time for a hostile takeover bid....

It's worth checking out the presentation that Green King gave to analysts yesterday (see link below), needless to see there are (Green King centric) comparisons between the various pub cos and Marstons fares rather well compared to the others.

Both Marstons and Greene King have entered my buying range, Post 309.

This has occurred very quickly and may indicate a lack of confidence in the Market as a whole.

Will hold of until a turn around in the FTSE occurs.

I bought a few more on Friday (current holding now 27K).

Peter Shearlock (of Heaven and Hell portfolio fame) gave a good plug for Marstons in today's Sunday Times (page 8 in the money section), alas, I cannot find the article on line.

edit: managed to find it (see link below)
