Small Businesses Fear Impact of Swine Flu

SME owners, already fighting to survive in the recession, fear an outbreak of swine flu could have a disastrous effect on their businesses.

Many small businesses have already been forced to cut staff and claim they would be unable to cope with widespread absences caused by a pandemic.

alldayPA, which, provides a 24 hour call answering service largely used by SMEs, has been contacted by almost a third of its 23,000 clients to confirm contingency plans should their businesses been affected.

The company has also received more than 200 calls in the past week from businesses looking to set up an emergency call answering service in the event of a major outbreak.

Gemma Harding, alldayPA's corporate communications director, said: "Predictions of a swine flu pandemic are being taken very seriously by the business community.

"We have been contacted by literally thousands of our clients in recent days wanting to ensure that we have facilities in place to manage calls and enquiries should they or their staff be struck down by the illness.

"Times are tough enough for SMEs and every call is a potential new client or piece of business and knowing that there is a trained PA available to answer every call they can't, helps give them piece of mind."

In addition to its 24-hour call answering service, alldayPA offers an emergency back up service where calls can be automatically transferred to their team of call handlers should absence cause a client's office to be unexpectedly unmanned.

To minimise the impact of swine flu on its business, alldayPA, based in Manchester, has split its 127 full and part-time staff into three separate call centres and is paying for all staff taking holidays in affected areas to have a full medial check before returning to work.

The Department of Health has warned that a swine flu pandemic could see 25 percent of the population falling ill, costing the UK economy £1.5bn a day in lost business.

The Federation of Small Businesses is urging its members to identify individual staff who could easily work from home and make sure they have been provided with necessary equipment such as laptops.

It is has also advised firms to consider relaxing absence policies which stipulate that staff cannot be off sick for more than seven days without a doctor's letter – warning that going out to a surgery could potentially increase the risk of spreading infection.

Will PIG FLU limit peoples movements?

you're behind the curve milacs.

Bloomberg discussion is a V Shape recovery now - how fickle these brokers are. And G.Sachs' Jim O'Neil saying the latest ISM number out of the States isn't green shoots, it's dafodills!

I think punters will be surprised how rapidly many of these co's recover.

last chance to catch thes ewill sentiment is unjustifiably lower just cos of a bit of flu. That will all be over in week or two and the brokers will be saying buy because of the hot sunny weather making comparisons much better imo.

From Times market report 24 April:

Mitchells & Butlers gained 6p to 274¼p on speculation that it would gain support for a rights issue after the £207 million issue by Greene King, which gained 9p to 562p. Hugh-Guy Lorriman, of Seymour Pierce, said he expected similar cash calls for M&B, JD Wetherspoon, down ½p at 409½p, and Marstons, up 1p at 159¾p. Punch Taverns, which is unlikely to win support for a share issue, lost 2½p to 93p.

Will be interesting to see if other pubcos follow this lead.

Marston's are the obvious example.

PUB and ETI may want a bigger share price increase increase before they are tempted.

Went to a Marston's two for one meal pub last night.

Food was reasonable but beer cost £2.72 per pint.

Got to get real to catch Wetherspoons.
