Bill Gates: 'Extreme' Politicians Pushing For 70% Tax Rate Are 'Missing The Picture'by Jayson Derricka day agoIt was only a matter of time before one of the world's richest individuals commented on the latest debate sweeping Wall Street and Main Street: whether a 70-percent tax rate on the uber wealthy is the right thing to do.The world's second-richest person, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT) co-founder Bill Gates, told The Verge in a podcast this week that a "more progressive" tax formula for the wealthy is needed.Gates is worth $96.7 billion, according to Forbes. The landscape today is dominated by "extreme" politicians who are calling for a 70-percent tax bracket for those with income over $10 million, Gates said. The majority of the gains made by the world's richest individuals come from selling stock and other assets, Gates said during "The Vergecast" interview. Since this is not taxed as regular income, it is only rational that the top 400 earners in the U.S. pay a 20-percent overall tax rate versus the 39.6-percent "marginal ordinary income rate.""So it's a misfocus," Gates said. "If you focus on that, you're missing the picture."Why It's ImportantGates' comments were not directed at any one politician, although according to CNBC he was referencing rookie Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez when he mentioned tax proposals he termed "so extreme" and "beyond" reasonable."You do start to create tax dodging and disincentives, and an incentive to have the income show up in other countries and things," Gates said. "But we can be more progressive without really threatening income generation - what you have left to decide how to spread around."What's NextGates' conversation about the future of tax policy is more aligned with Sen. Elizabeth Warren's proposals for taxing households with a net worth of more than $50 million, CNBC said. Gates is in favor of governments focusing on estate, capital and Social Security taxes, the report said.

It is the EU that is continuing to fight WW2, except for using bullying and coercion rather than bombs and bullets to continue the Third Reich.

Countries among the seven (7 out of 69 countries) where trade deals have been agreed so far include the Faroe Isles; good to know. Who said that these were a piece of cake?

Polar - you should charge for your very good news service :) I guess ERG are trying to disrupt process as they have an interest in "no deal" by default.

cm44 - thanks for the link, even if potentially bad news. Depends if exaggerated, but still poor policy, if anywhere near true.

Ford mulls moving production from UK.

Ford has told Theresa May that it is ramping up preparations to shift production out of the UK, according to a report.

The US manufacturer’s warning comes after Nissan announced that production of its new X-Trail would go ahead in Japan rather than the UK.

During a private conversation between business leaders and the prime minister Ford said it was preparing alternative sites abroad.
Ford had already warned last month that a no-deal Brexit would cost it $1bn (£775m). Ford employs 13,000 people in the UK including 1,000 at its plant in Bridgend, south Wales whose jobs have already come under threat.
The company confirmed this month that 370 voluntary redundancies would take place at the site as the company takes measures to create a "sustainably profitable business" in Europe.
Despite being the UK’s best-selling car brand, Ford has struggled to consistently make a profit in Europe.
Vehicle makers support 850,000 UK jobs and have issued repeated warnings about the impact of Brexit.

Last week Toyota slashed its profit forecast for 2019 and warned that it will be impossible to avoid the harmful effects of a no-deal Brexit.
“We cannot avoid the negative impact no matter how much we prepare beforehand if Britain leaves the EU with no deal.”

The industry’s trade body this month pleaded, saying nothing had changed since the 2016 referendum to reassure car manufacturers about the prospects of investing in Britain.
And they are “beyond frustration” with the politicians.
Investment in the British car industry fell by 50 per cent in 2018 as firms held back spending due to Brexit-related uncertainty.

Posted earlier,Lloyds related, not sure if any of you even bothered to open the link as there was no comment!!

Rumours have long swirled that big banks destroyed companies in the wake of the financial crisis to confiscate property and shore up their own balance sheets – claims the lenders deny.

But this is the first time an insider involved in the process has spoken out about what went on.
The whistleblower has now been interviewed for more than an hour by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), and its chief executive Andrew Bailey is understood to be aware of the claims.

Evidence has also been shared with the National Crime Agency, the Mail understands.
e whistleblower claims that a turnaround business called Baronsmead conspired with Lloyds to push firms into administration even when they could be saved.

In previously unpublished court documents, the insider – who was supported by campaign group Whisleblowers UK – sets out how Baronsmead was appointed in 2012 by struggling property company Angel Group to help save it from collapse, and paid £3,500 a day for its efforts.

But the insider claims that from the start, Baronsmead was conspiring to wreck the company.

g2: of course not. ;-) but they are not propositions to be taken seriously in our political system, as even we have delineating rules. But government policy does have to legislate in areas that are politically far more contentious.

Just to be clear bbalanjones: you'd be happy to see the Conservative Party printing election leaflets, paying rent on Central Office and constituency premises, paying its election agents etc etc and charging the lot to the exchequer?
