27/9/2020 16:56 | Graham Crispin 27 Sep 2020 12:42PMThese aren't universities they are prisons. Treating anyone, let alone youngsters, particularly the freshers who have never lived away from home before, in this fashion is unacceptable on any level.Keeping them in what amounts to regimented solitary confinement, preventing any form of socialising, and then attempting to keep them from returning home, must surely be illegal? It certainly amounts to psychological torture. This must be like living in an internment camp, with no date for release set. That this is being done, let alone allowed, by any government is unacceptable in a civilised society. I don't suppose they'll be publishing the suicide rate for students anytime soon. | xxxxxy
27/9/2020 16:50 | Objective Reality 27 Sep 2020 1:20PMWhat's next Boris? Lock up the tory rebels? This tyranny is out of hand. We now need a TRULY independent review of the evidence, advice, conflicts of interest and the resultant decisions that have more harm to this country in peacetime than any other action in the modern era.The unnecessary health impact, psychological impact and economic trauma needlessly inflicted on the UK must be exposed and those accountable must be held to civil and criminal account. | xxxxxy
27/9/2020 16:29 | Endless Daily Express et al articles prior to today's vote: "EU crisis: Danger of a ‘Swiss Brexit’ as critical referendum sparks panic in Brussels SWITZERLAND could be about to follow in the footsteps of Britain and have their own "Brexit moment" as the Central European country holds a critical referendum on its relationship with the EU". Today - not a word, let alone an article. Some people have not been fooled. | alphorn

27/9/2020 13:23 | Live Coronavirus latest news: Government faces 'certain' defeat on Coronavirus Act, says Steve Baker The Government is facing "certain" defeat on the Coronavirus Act provided that a Tory rebellion is supported by opposition MPs, a leading Conservative backbencher has said. Steve Baker has said that he is sure that there will be enough support to force through an amendment which would force Boris Johnson to put all future lockdown measures to a vote in the House of Commons. "It’s all about MPs having a vote on the Government's policy before it comes into force and takes away people’s civil liberties," Mr Baker told Sky's Sophy Ridge. “I back Boris Johnson, I want him to succeed. But we do need to share with the Government the burden of decision on these measures and not just come in days or weeks later voting retrospectively on measures that may have then been amended. It’s been a nonsense." In all, 42 Tory MPs have backed an amendment tabled by 1922 Committee chairman, Sir Graham Brady to require a new Parliament vote as soon as possible on new powers. Mr Baker described the amendment as a "modest proposal". | maxk

27/9/2020 12:24 | Minerve, the Cliff Richard case - which was an outrage, I completely agree with you - amounted to a lot more than giving out his name. It was a dawn commando raid with full TV coverage and a presumption of guilt. I recently bought Jim Davidson's "No Further Action" DVD, which played to "standing ovations to packed houses every night." That should be interesting. Yewtree was everything that can be wrong about policing. A lot of people suffered badly for no good reason. | grahamite2
27/9/2020 12:23 | Swiss voters have rejected a proposal to end an agreement with the European Union on the free movement of people, TV projections suggest. Broadcaster SRF said voters were set to reject the plan by 63% to 37%. Ballots are still being counted, and final results are due within hours. Swiss not as stupid as Brits. | minerve 2

27/9/2020 12:14 | A lockdown is the most extreme form of social distancing in the State's armoury. Yet wherever it has been imposed, the virus has simply bounced back to hit us when it was lifted. Some of the most repressive measures, like those imposed in Spain and Israel, have seen the worst outcomes. If lockdowns do not work, what hope is there for lesser measures like the rule of six and pub curfews, which are like fighting off a tiger with a feather duster? | xxxxxy
27/9/2020 11:54 | Minerve 227 Sep '20 - 10:46 - 315563 of 315569 0 1 0 No one should be named until proven guilty by the judicial system. That is not the way it works or ever has worked. Of course you must say nothing that presupposes guilt; but saying "police would like to speak to Joe Bloggs who they think can help them with their enquiries," is perfectly proper and perfectly normal. Anyway the identity of the suspect is not the most interesting thing here. How can someone arrested by two policemen, who were then joined by three more, keep a weapon concealed? FIVE coppers couldn't find a gun - on someone arrested for having ammo, amongst other things? This might be one of those rare cases where "lessons will be learned" could be more than a fatuous platitude. | grahamite2
