Johnson’s August 1) He must spend time in Scotland

It is now overwhelmingly likely that Boris Johnson will be the next Conservative Party leader and become Prime Minister.

He may well face a no confidence vote in September, and the Brexit extension expires at the end of October in any event.

So he and his new team will have to hit the ground running in August. We open today a brief series on what he should do during that month and late July before the Commons is due to return on September 3.

Wind power output in Scotland hit a record high during the first six months of 2019, according to figures from Weather Energy.
It has calculated the energy produced by turbines could power every home in Scotland and part of the north of England.
The period to June, it claimed, saw the equivalent of 4.47 million homes' consumption supplied by wind power.
WWF Scotland has described the trend as a "wind energy revolution".
Its climate and energy policy manager Robin Parker, said: "These are amazing figures; Scotland's wind energy revolution is clearly continuing to power ahead.
"Up and down the country, we are all benefiting from cleaner energy and so is the climate.
"These figures show harnessing Scotland's plentiful onshore wind potential can provide clean, green electricity for millions of homes across not only Scotland, but England as well.
Alex Wilcox Brooke, of Severn Wye Energy Agency, added: "These figures really highlight the consistency of wind energy in Scotland and why it now plays a major part in the UK energy market."

There was a time immigrants to America went there determined to become Americans. That didn't mean forgetting their roots entirely - they might even call themselves "Italian" or "Irish" or whatever - but they aimed to fit in and try and become part of the American Dream.

Now they go to America and can't wait to say what a terrible, awful place it is - in which case, why didn't they stay at home? The people Trump was attacking are some of the worst of these and Trump was 100% right. He has nothing to apologize for.

Here's an idea, Phil: how about you and your m8s do everything you can to support Brexit, and then we might avoid a "no-deal". And just to make it clear to you, the next PM will do all he can to secure a deal that works for both us and the EU. The "no-deal" scenario is something that we have to prepare for and has to be a bargaining chip.

BB, could you give a date from when we'll see troops on the streets? You say months, could you be more specific please? Then we can look back at that time and see whether we actually have troops on the streets or whether you have caught the paranoia bug, which seems to be infecting remoaners more and more as Brexit day approaches. If you don't give a date, I'll assume 6 months, so we'll revisit this on Jan 15 2020.

Any other paranoias? Aircraft falling out of the sky? Aliens destroying all humans in November? All men becoming impotent, so the end of mankind? Scotland sinking into the north sea?

cheshire - I was talking to my broker today about GBP. It really does feel to me that the decline is being 'managed' somehow (which theoretically is not possible). The 'run' that I had expected has not materialised (yet?) rather a relentless decline that IMO has more to go.

You are right on one point in that people have the memory span of a gnat.

Boris will leave with no deal. November 2019 will be fine. The economy will flourish. The business bluff about issues will be seen as ...bluff.



Lorries, ferries and planes will still cross borders. Trade will go on. The City will boom as uncertainty has gone encouraging transactions and house prices will pick up. UK people will travel around the EU. The BoE may cut interest rates a nominal amount.



The economy will flourish. It will be like leaving the ERM. Remainers said then it would cause a Uk crashing out catastrophe. The UK left, instantly ended recession, and flourished with an 8 year boom.



There will be minimal disruption. The media will try to find problems. They will ask Remainers where is their cliff edge crash.



Boris is no fool. He knows if he reneges on the specific promise the Tories are finished. They would get sub 20% of a vote in the GE. He may try to do a deal with the Brexit Party to run in Northern seats.



May's arrogance, duplicity and stupidity has destroyed any trust in the Tories. Her stupidity is not seeing the Eu disaster is sinking fast.



If the Uk leaves



1. Uk consumers will access cheaper global goods, and not be shafted by the EU for £100 Bn pa

2. The 96% of Uk firms with no Eu trade will no longer suffer Eu rules that cost them some £35 Bn pa.

3. It will be free from the sclerotic Eu Rulebook that stifles Uk business.

4. It will avoid the Eu Debt Bomb

5. It will no longer be liable to pay £200 Bn into an Eu bail out

6. It joins the 93% of global population that is growing as it is free of Eu rules.

7. It will no longer pay some £363 million per week to the Eu. Enough to build two new NHS hospitals each week.

8. It will no longer have the Eu using the rebate to bribe the U political class.

9. It can reform the CAP and CFP that have done huge damage to Uk farming and fishing.

10. Can do trade deals to suit the Uk, not to suit Eurocrats and Belgian farmers.

11. The Irish will do checks away from the border as they planned with no deal.



Sadly for the Eu it will sink faster as Asia takes Eu manufacturing. While 1 in 5 Eu workers retire and the Eu labour force collapses. The Eu has no plans for pensions and the huge rise in costs will break the Eu.

Soros wasn't the only one making a killing shorting sterling. Everyone who could see what was going on was doing the same. This is what happens when stupid politicians like Major try and interfere with the markets for political ends. As his predecessor Maggie Thatcher once said 'you can't buck the market'.
Unbelievable that Major now sees fit to try and interfere with Brexit when his credibility is zilch. Maybe he thinks people can only remember up to 3 months.

Thanks M4rtinu. So on balance it looks now that existing provisions should cover the final couple of months of claims unless there is a major surge, although any drop off will leave us a few tens of millions to the good.lets hope there is not any other major skeleton in the cupboard as PPI has cost shareholder massively in both lost dividends and suppressed share price. I haven't heard much lately about those high profile individuals (inc Noel Edmonds) who are suing Lloyds for losses.Looks like Brexit is the biggest game in town now then. What an absolute fiasco it has been all round.
