15/11/2023 10:23 | Europe’s renewable energy push is destined for ruin According to energy economist Anas Alhajji, only about 3% of global electricity is produced from oil. No matter how quickly we are building out wind and solar, then, this will only have a very small effect on the need for crude oil, and that demand is going to grow. The wealthiest billion people on the planet use roughly 13-14 barrels per capita of energy; the other seven billion inhabitants, by comparison, only use about three barrels per capita. Unless we assume that 7/8ths of the world’s population have no interest in improving their living standards, global energy consumption will increase rapidly in the coming decades, just as it has in the past. Can it be covered by renewable energy alone? The largest investor in renewables is China, but at current investment levels it would take Beijing 211 years to reach Net Zero. Looking at these numbers, it is no surprise that in 2022 China used more coal than the rest of the world combined. | sea7
15/11/2023 10:19 | Net Zero? What Net Zero? With a combined population of 2.7 billion China and India are still predominantly focusing on coal to meet their rapidly increasing demand for energy, never mind transitioning to gas and oil: In April 2021, Chinese President Xi Jinping pledged to “strictly control coal-fired power generation projects” in China. Two years before that pledge, China had approved 127 new power generating plants capable of producing 54 gigawatts of coal power. Two years after that pledge, the number had risen to 182. India is on schedule to increase coal production by circa 58% by 2030. The coal ministry recently announced plans to increase India's coal production to 1.4 billion tonnes by 2027, with a potential further boost to 1.58 billion tonne by 2030. Current domestic coal production is circa 1 billion tonnes. The US is on target to generate record Coal, Gas and Oil production in 2023. These three countries currently generate 49% of all global CO2 emissions. Meanwhile in the UK, which accounts for 0.9% of global CO2 emissions, as a result of the political push to ultra expensive 'renewable' energy our fuel bills are one of the highest in the world(only renewables 'king' Germany is higher, post the shutdown of cheap imported nat gas from Russia) and, we're increasingly being charged to drive in urban areas, and coerced/forced to 'upgrade' our heating and insulate our properties. What a scam......by grandstanding politicians, keen to demonstrate their 'green' credentials! | mount teide
15/11/2023 09:34 | More authors call for Baillie Gifford to divest from fossil fuels MORE authors have joined calls for the Scottish investment bank Baillie Gifford to cut ties with the fossil fuel industry. In August, climate activist Greta Thunberg cancelled an appearance at the Edinburgh International Book Festival due to the event being sponsored by Baillie Gifford. She said she could not attend due to Baillie Gifford’s investments in the fossil fuel industry and said its sponsorship of cultural events amounted to “greenwashing& The group Fossil Free Books (FFB) has since issued a statement calling on the 12 book festivals currently sponsored by Baillie Gifford to urge the company to divest from fossil fuels. | sea7
