Yes, 200p seems more sensible valuation. around 140p as the floor

Selling here is too early purely based on the fact this is the only way into Russian names at present, should get above 200p on that alone.

With the GBP buying over 40% more rubles than a fortnight ago, JRS might be considering taking advantage of that when the Russian stock market re opens. The next few months could be very lucrative.

Good to see another country/body get involved in the discussions.

But !
If the Russians have really offered a deal based on
- Rus keeping Crimea & Donatsk area
- Ukr agreeing not to join Nato (& which also means deleting that from their Constitution)

Then I don't understand why Ukr has not already agreed. I assume that Russia wants more things, perhaps such as keeping the land that their military control now. Which I can understand Ukr (& the west) refusing since it condones the recent Rus military action.

If you want to take the risk with Russia now, this is pretty much the only instrument available, even RSX is no longer trading.

My guess on the news is the RNSs from some companies with links to Russia, saying that their shares do not need to be suspended, that outside of the rules of the UK sanctions. Basically since not controlled, ie. not >50% of shares held by a Russian 'entity'. (While their might be some debate about whether Russians living in London & phps with a UK or non-Russian passport count as 'Russians' or not).

As you say m1970, selling off shares once the value of the shares have fallen 80% to 90% only hurts the seller, in our case will mainly financially hurt the British people who have invested in these funds.

Conversely the beneficiaries will be the buyers of these shares, namely the Chinese and Russian oligarchs.

I have never understood the arguement that selling off shares of Russian stocks at a tenth of the price is in any way a hardship for Russia. You cannot sell shares unless someone is prepared to buy them, which in this case will no doubt be the likes of China, Russia (government and billionaires), many other countries, and of course the usual financial sharks in the UK, EU and USA.

Likewise Shell etc selling off their holdings in joint ventures at knock down prices in the likes of Gazprom to the likes of, er, Gazprom does not appear to be a huge blow to Russia.

This is a story from Sky about the UK Treasury calling a meeting with a group of London fund management groups re. their investments in Russia. The fund managers seem to have resisted the Treasury's pressure to sell out at zero value, saying that this would only benefit Putin.
It's possible that when semi-ordely markets return JPM comes under pressure to wind-up JRS. But if that happens,it should be at a NAV alot higher than now.

"Britain’s multitrillion pound asset management industry has been asked to pressure London-listed companies to sever ties with Russia as a corporate exodus grows following Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

Sky News has learnt that Chancellor Rishi Sunak and John Glen, the City minister, met executives from companies including Aviva, Fidelity, Phoenix and Schroders last Friday to demand that they signal a more robust approach towards their own remaining holdings in Russia.

According to a source briefed on the meeting, which also included representatives from the Investment Association and the City regulator, some fund managers expressed concern that the Treasury's stance risked turning them into forced sellers of Russian assets.

That could in turn benefit Mr Putin and those close to him if they are able to acquire those stakes at prices which have plunged close to zero, the source said.

In a tweet on Friday, Mr Sunak said he and Mr Glen had "met with leading figures in financial services to discuss UK investment in Russia and what more we can do to inflict maximum economic pain on Putin".

Further details of the discussions have yet to be reported.

What have I seen so far about Russia going into the Ukraine. The Russian army is lead by generals who are just incompetent Yes men.

Luckily for Russia, they have the best and most competent, able and capable Central Bank Governor, Elvira Nabiullina, who really knows what she is doing and has a thorough understanding of the currency and banking system and in my opinion is the best Central Bank governor of any in the OECD group of countries.

Russia still has China as a major market for its energy and commodities. By switching extra supplies to China, China will simply cut back on its imports from the rest of the world.
