Dare I say it but looking good. Hopefully some good news this lunchtime from across the pond with the release of the PCE (personal consumption expenditure) inflation data will boost the market as a whole.

We're also due an update from goldfinger methinks! 👍

"And how do you know smarty pants?"

Because that is what "HEDGING would be you muppet. Long the Bonds, Short the Equity.
Many hedge funds engage in such.

And then there's Options - straddles n strangles. Etc etc

many reasons they might be short but also long elsewhere

The shorts in ITV are a small percentage and they are not naked shorts or it's a million to one chance they have at least an equal amount of stock and more betting on the upside.

Ask George Soros, he made millions on being long and short at the same time. Real gamblers in volatile stocks buy forward calls and puts and over a period make a profit on both ends.

Johnnybig, my advice would be that you ask your Mummy to buy you the 'Ladybird book of stock trading' a nice stocking filler for would be Jesse Livermore's and that's about the long and the short of it!

Johnnybig...It happens all the time, the big players only have to disclose the short if it's a certain percentage.

I trade options and it's common to do a 'Straddle' which is long and short in the same stock.

An options straddle involves buying (or selling) both a call and a put with the same strike price and expiration on the same underlying asset. A long straddle pays off when volatility increases and the price of the underlying moves by a large amount, but it doesn't matter whether it's to the upside or the downside.

You can bet that the ITV shorts are well covered. I wish I could explain it simply but I am not a teacher.

Why the panic on some shorters, it's just another hedge and there is nothing sinister about it.

Short selling is also used to provide liquidity in response to unanticipated demand, or to hedge the risk of an economic long position in the same security or in a related security. If the price of the stock rises, short sellers who buy it at the higher price will incur a loss on the short position but will profit on the long position.

The short in ITV will be well covered and imo the shorter will be well positioned in both directions. It's not rocket science!

Love them or hate them, shorters aren't thick but they seem to be seeing something in ITV which others can't. ITV seems to be in an uptrend with an upturn in advertising and at the start of a long term buyback, so it's not something I'd short.

The shorters are continuing to attack itv with glg partners increasing their short. There'll be a tight supply of stock when they finally close. We will win this war!
