Found it interesting about the turbulence or sometimes smooth flight experience flying in the jet stream...Concorde used to fly at 60,000 feet and that nearly always eliminates any turbulence. Have enjoyed a couple of these from NY, and loved it as I hate any turbulence...just have a grin and bear it nowadays. Executive jets are also quite good as they tend to fly over 40,000 feet, however the trouble with that is that the pressure can be pretty strong, and can be a risk factor.Treading water with share price today and no momentum yet to take the shares higher before the Y/E results, later this month. South American flights are reported to be increasing as 80% of adventure travelers are switching to the West,US/Canada and South America, from the East according to the latest reports over the China virus concerns.
In the near term lower China industrial activity will impact Global trade, and some higher costs through delays of shipments/production will hit some sectors, but airlines should not be that effected. Hopefully the recovery and bounce will happen once the virus outbreak reverses.

Storm Ciara helps plane beat transatlantic flight record

9 February 2020

ys flight landed 80 minutes ahead of schedule

Experts are hailing a British Airways flight as the fastest subsonic New York to London journey.

The Boeing 747-436 reached speeds of 825 mph (1,327 km/h) as it rode a jet stream accelerated by Storm Ciara.

The four hours and 56 minutes flight arrived at Heathrow Airport 80 minutes ahead of schedule on Sunday morning.

According to Flightradar24, an online flight tracking service, it beat a previous five hours 13 minutes record held by Norwegian.

The BBC has been unable to independently verify the record as no complete database of flight times was available.

Aviation consultant and former BA pilot Alastair Rosenschein said the aeroplane reached a "phenomenal speed".
'Prioritise safety'

"The pilot will have sat their aircraft in the core of the jet stream and at this time of year it's quite strong.

"Turbulence in those jet streams can be quite severe, but you can also find it can be a very smooth journey."

The jet stream reached speeds of 260 mph (418 km/h) on Sunday morning, according to BBC Weather.

Despite travelling faster than the speed of sound the plane would not have broken the sonic barrier as it was helped along by fast-moving air.

Relative to the air, the plane was travelling slower than 801mph.

Modern passenger planes usually travel at about 85% the speed of sound, according to Mr Rosenschein.

British Airways said: "We always prioritise safety over speed records.

"Our highly-trained pilots made the most of the conditions to get customers back to London well ahead of time."

The fastest transatlantic crossing belongs to BA Concorde, which flew from New York to London in two hours 52 minutes and 59 seconds in 1996 - hitting a top speed of 1,350 mph.

Wow! just seen it.....4 hours 56 min. quite a record. Then you see the terribly sad state for some residence in Cumbria with their water-logged homes, and makes one wonder what progress are we really making! On the China virus etc. I was just panning the global flight radar and aware traffic sites and the traffic everywhere is amazing..even quite a lot of activity around HK, and some parts of China...I was bit surprised. People need/want to travel....maybe January flight traffic details out tomorrow...with the Y/E results in a few weeks and anticipation of divi declaration the share price may hold-up quite well. Certainly been an attractive trade and also to hold a balance for income...RBS recently reduced/halved my deposit account to .020%...really appalling, so what is the alternative...I think I know! Any thoughts here on Royal Mail....a deal with the Unions to bring practices into the 21st Century is urgently needed, and it beggars believe that they have not grasped the nettle with competition at their door.

Agree to some extent t-t, but the new cases in China have fallen a bit over the last 2 days, so hopefully a turning point. China's leadership will need to change as their Citizens are getting restless with lack of truth etc....the Government will adapt and this may play out for the good. Again the deaths from ordinary seasonal flu is getting worse as I mentioned in an earlier post. I just hope that the cases outside China with this new virus will be contained...expect a few more but in a couple of weeks the position may well have improved. The key is not to be complacent going forward as there is a tendency for people to overlook events which cause a shock at first.

To that end, as I said the other day when the price was on the up and people were high fiving about how the shorters would be burnt. My question was, "what's changed?". As no one really had definitive answer, my response was to hang back rather than dive in. That response still stands until a concrete answer can be given.

It does sound low but as a group (BA, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Level, Veuling etc), their exposure through direct routes to China could be close to this. What I disagree with though is that 1% is all we can expect in terms of hit to the IAG business from the virus.Without sounding pessimistic (I'm a realist), I know people who are thinking of UK holidays, rather than sitting in an aluminium tube with other passengers who MAY have come in contact with a Corona Virus sufferer. Bonkers I know at this stage but as more statistics and media hype come to light, this will definitely get worse before it gets better.Comparisons between this and SARS are not that similar. Back nearly 2 decades ago, there wasn't quite such readily available access to cheap air travel. I'm not just talking about a EasyJet or Ryanair in Europe, I mean the AirAsias, Indigos etc in the Asian marketplaces. These gateways for both transmission to other passengers and national and international transference is where my concerns lie with regard to this share at the present. It's fundamentals are good but for this short/medium term blight.

Walsh commented in Middle East conference on Monday that the China effect was only 1% of revenues which seemed rather on the low side.

Maybe Monday for load factors...SP on a bit of a slide at present, perhaps some profits taken off the table. The US announced today that the seasonal flu issue in their country has claimed over 10,000 deaths so far with hospital stays up very high. I need to buy a few more Pharma shares like GSK even after their fall yesterday.

Just curious, why the derogatory reference to Trump? Folks seem to jump in with impunity on this as regular as clockwork. I find it astonishing to a US President. Like him or not, that's who he is, he was voted in and he's done a heap load more to help the US and world affairs than PC, look right, Obama ever did.

Could be Micky but oil prices haven't just sunk this morning, they've been depressed for a while now.Likewise, OPEC were looking at reducing output, which could change the price of a barrel fairly quickly up again. Think I'll sit this one out, as I don't see a strong reason for this and in my experience, taking a punt without knowing the odds or reasons, often leads to a loss. The price is still ticking up which is good, just I don't see the reward vs risk at this stage is large enough.

Has there been some positive news in this sector or in general that Im missing? All the airlines I'm monitoring are strong blues today. Yet, I see nothing to support this swing.Personally, I'm not convinced that they won't tank with the next bit of virus news or European negativity. Pleased for those that can keep their fingers on the pulse and ride the volatility but I'm not that quick, so will hold to see whether this is a bounce or has substance.
