Keeps trickling down. How low will they go?

I still find it difficult to work out exactly where they are involved and where they aren't. Chatting to the company didn't help much because it was all so hush-hush. Seem to have their heads down concentrating on doing what they do well though.

Still holding.

Good morning Rambutan and thanks for the above post.
I noticed that Sun are heading a Java initiative which sounds exactly the same. The danger with all these open initiatives is that they may cause some confusion for the buyer or even worse delays at decision time. Also its another attempt by these pesky euronits to get one up on Uncle S.

Smart card integration important for future growth
Tuesday, August 3 2004
Increased smart card adoption rates could hinge on how well smart cards are able to integrate with emerging logical and physical access control technologies–like USB tokens and prox cards--according to a new report from Frost & Sullivan.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Integration of Smart Cards with Upcoming Technologies Essential to Boost Adoption Rates
PALO ALTO, Calif. (BUSINESS WIRE)--The uptake of smart cards is likely to be threatened by the emergence of alternative technologies such as proximity and magnetic stripe cards in physical access control applications and universal serial bus (USB) tokens in logical access control applications.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (www.smartcards.frost.com), World Access Control (Physical & Logical) Market, reveals that revenues in this industry totaled $62.4 million in 2003 and are projected to reach $86.9 million in 2008.

"Even as smart card manufacturers remain wary of rival technologies, the ability of smart cards to host multiple applications is expected to give them an edge over other technologies," says Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Karthik Nagarajan.

Capable of balancing initial costs with the highest security architecture, smart cards provide a proven cost-effective solution. Further, they can be integrated with competing technologies to derive maximum benefit as they are highly flexible and can be easily modified and upgraded to complement other systems.

For instance, though USB is a potentially rival technology, USB dongles using embedded smart cards in SIM format increase overall efficiency. These USB tokens use a smart card-based network login system that eliminates the need for an actual card reader. The device can be plugged into a computer's standard USB port to authenticate users and digitally sign sensitive business transactions.

In combination with a SIM-based card, USB can be used in virtual private network (VPN) and in gaining corporate ID access to a computer network. Manufacturers are also considering the idea of merging USB dongles with contactless technology to provide both physical and logical access control.

However, not all users require the multi-application advantage of smart cards. It makes better business sense for them to opt for a single-purpose card. For instance, proximity cards are relatively cheaper than contactless cards for physical access control. Therefore, as a short-term investment for basic physical security access, organizations prefer this technology.

"Managing existing identifications systems alone is a huge expense for many companies," says Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Jafizwaty Haji Ishahak. "Moreover, in a card-based electronic access control system, cards need to be replaced or re-issued for various reasons, and this further increases the expenses incurred."

The process of implementing a smart card system is also rather cumbersome, as it requires card issuance and personalization overheads.

Though the price of readers has decreased for logical access control, a company needs to purchase smart cards and provide or integrate their PCs with readers. It is also essential that the company have a card management system to manage the card issuance and revocation.

Further, many corporations prefer storing digital certificates and private keys on the hard drives rather than incurring the expenditure of installing readers and issuing smart cards.

"Smart cards are well positioned to keep pace with changing end-user demands as they are easily compatible with other systems," notes Ishahak. "Manufacturers should try to take advantage of smart cards' superior efficiency and incorporate them with other emerging technologies to maximize profits."

World Access Control (Physical & Logical) Market, part of the Smart Card Subscription, evaluates the uptake of corporate ID smart cards in both physical and logical access control applications. It analyzes the success of pilot programs that have incorporated this technology and provides a comprehensive analysis of revenue potential and growth opportunities for different types of access control smart cards. Regional analysis of the market is provided to help companies identify key opportunities for market penetration.

Intercede obtains CAPS approval for SecureDoc, WinMagic's disk encryption product

Lutterworth, Leicestershire, United Kingdom - August 17, 2004 - Intercede Group plc, today announced that it has secured CAPS baseline approval for SecureDocTM, WinMagic's highly certified disk encryption product. This follows an extensive evaluation by CESG, the United Kingdom National Technical Authority for Information Security. Intercede is the sole distributor of CAPS Approved SecureDoc to all Her Majesty's Government (HMG) and UK Ministry of Defence customers.

SecureDoc for HMG - Disk Encryption
SecureDoc for HMG is a software based, full disk encryption product for PCs and Laptops running Windows 2000 or Windows XP.

Using SecureDoc for HMG, the hard disk is fully encrypted using the AES algorithm, implemented before the operating system is loaded to provide pre-boot protection. Boot time authentication is via CESG FIREGUARD password, or the combination of FIREGUARD password and cryptographic token (smart card or USB key). Once authenticated, SecureDoc is transparent to the user, all data written to the disk or read from the disk is automatically encrypted. SecureDoc's unique key file system enables multiple user access to the PC, a dual-boot capability providing access to separate operating systems under different keys and per-user disk access control, with each user having their own unique password.

SecureDoc has also achieved validations for Common Criteria and FIPS 140-1 level 2 validation. The SecureDoc FORTEZZA-based version is the ONLY disk encryption software certified by the National Standards Association (NSA) to safeguard US Government SECRET information.

"There is a large market for CAPS approved disk encryption products within HMG and Intercede already has at least one large government department committed to a deployment of SecureDoc for HMG." said Richard Parris, Chairman and Chief Executive, Intercede Group plc. "By combining SecureDoc for HMG with secure tokens, e.g. smart cards, and Intercede's MyID smart card and identity management system we offer a unique solution for protecting access to sensitive information across a wide range of applications. We expect to lever the benefits of this solution to generate sales revenues in the current year and beyond."

The CAPS approved version of SecureDoc is available now for HMG departments requiring a secure but simple to deploy disk encryption solution.

Government claims ID card support
Public consultation received support from two-thirds of respondents
By Gareth Morgan [02-05-2003]

The public is coming round to the idea of ID cards, the government has claimed.
A public consultation had sought views on the government's proposals to introduce the entitlement cards, which it claims will cut fraud, tackle illegal working and immigration and improve access to government services.

The consultation received an estimated 2,000 responses.

A report detailing the responses is not expected until August. But Home Office minister Beverley Hughes told Parliament this week that "responses have been about 2:1 in favour of introducing a scheme".

Critics of ID cards have pointed to the costs of developing such a scheme, which could top £2.6bn, according to reseach commissioned by the Office of the Information Commissioner.

But Hughes said: "Some upfront expenditure would certainly be involved. The cost of the scheme would be borne by individuals as they applied for cards."

I read in a paper today that cost is now estimated to be as high as £6bn !!!!

Nice to hear you guys chatting away. Must be life in IGP yet. I've done some homework on this tiny company and was expecting better second half figures to close the year. They need to start closing sales big time. Hopefully with the general trend toward ID security in all its many forms, this year will be considerably stronger.

Johndee,

Which crazy lot were that then.

I was told that if U get a company in a growth sector with losses declining and margins increasing and cash ouflow decreasing year on year..then buy.

Well this one fits that..I expect revenues to higher this year too,so we should see profits too.
