Barclays and RBoS slipped as ABN Amro turned more negative on the two banks.
In fact, the broker recommended a switch into HSBC, sending HSBC ordinary
shares 8-1/2 pence higher to 883.

I believe more in CEO's opinion than the brokers' opinion.

During the last 2 months I was following Daniels from LLOY, and it has worked ...
SGC has been an another example.
I have a good feeling regarding HAS.
With regard to HSBA I am optimistic.

Good luck

In Hong Kong, shares closed sharply higher as investors boosted their holdings of blue chips and China-related plays in anticipation of a further rally in the New Year. The HSI closed up 225.5 points or 1.79 pct at 12,801.5. Banking shares were the day's biggest winners as sentiment in the sector was boosted by expectations that banks will soon start yuan banking services, dealers said. HSBC shares gained 1.50 hkd or 1.22 pct to a high of 122.50. HSBC Holdings Plc said it launched China's first foreign-branded yuan credit card with its partner Bank of Shanghai in Shanghai today after being given official approval by the country's banking authorities. In UK, HSBC 888p up 10p.

Friday, the Hang Seng closed up 131.5 points, or 1.07%, at 12,371.75 after
trading within a range of 12,299.70 to 12,443.97.

UK and US options expire today, HK options expire 30/12.

Expect volumes to be low until we are into the New Year - so the price could easily be pushed up or down. If its favourable to your position consider taking it, if not wait for the volumes to return.

I wish you a prosperous 2004.

Up following Standard Chartered's favourable trading update.

Note that China Life Insurance's hugely-popular initial public offering (IPO) subscription closed at noon today - expect funds to take at least a week to return back into the Hong Kong market.

Looked at in HK$, the most likely scenario is HK$114 support, rise to HK$120.5 then HK$122.

HSBA is trading in an upward channel with a 2003 floor now at 112 and a ceiling at 126.

If HK$114 were to fail then there is support at 111 and 109.5.
