16/3/2005 10:28 | "There have been suggestions that recent huge profits in the banking sector might lead the Chancellor to levy a windfall tax, in the same way that he did in 1997 on the privatised utility companies. This time, however, there is little evidence to suggest this is on the cards." Let's hope so. | crontab
16/3/2005 10:16 | today's budget is also likely to be a factor theres concern that the massive profits made by banks could be subjected to increased taxes | the_doctor

08/3/2005 21:02 | A ray of hope. BEIJING (AFX) - The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Ltd (HSBC) has won the Chinese banking regulator's approval to act as an agent for insurance products at three of its Shanghai branches. With the approval, the bank can start selling insurance products on behalf of insurers at its Shanghai branches, a service which was previously not open to foreign banks. Late last year, Liu Mingkang, chairman of the China Banking Regulatory Commission (CBRC), said the government would further open the country's banking sector, including opening more cities to foreign banks and allowing them to conduct insurance agent services. Under its WTO commitments, China is required to open the entire banking sector to foreign players by the end of 2006. HSBC will apply for a license from the local insurance regulator to start the business as soon as possible, it said in a statement. A separate report by Shanghai Morning Post quoted an official with the local insurance regulator as saying that foreign banks will be allowed to sell all insurance products that Chinese banks are also selling at their branches. allen.feng@xinhuafin | gonnabuildmeahouse
07/3/2005 13:41 | I think it is probably a bit of both. | stardream
06/3/2005 20:00 | 1d1 - hmm, was really expecting the $ to strengthen on the back of those NFPs. It's quite illogical because really we have further confirmation that interest rates will rise faster in the US than might have been the case. I'm not sure if it's a massive short sqeeze or really a sign that the $ has further to fall. | crontab
06/3/2005 15:42 | Out of curiosity, why did HSBC miss targets (or was it, it hit lower end of target range)?? I'm reading in the press that it was Household profits that let them down. Is that the general perception on the board?? GB. | greatbear

04/3/2005 12:12 | Blimey this is proving hard going. This weeks is a complete write-off methinks. Next week should be better. Of course it could just be more of the same. Note to self: remember this stock benefits when dollar index rises... | crontab
03/3/2005 09:27 | looking better today. | stardream |
