I think RBOS not move much on monday but will go north on Tuesday as HBOs results are out and they are expected to annouce 36% profit and increase in dividend. Then we have Abbey national results on wednesday and no need to tell where all the bank sector would be heading that day down cut in divident expected. So plan is to sell all the bank stock on tuesday let wednesday go and buy them back on wednesday before market close as RBOs is suppose to announce their results which i havent heard any thing about so if any body who has heard anything about RBOs results on 27 Feb can shed some light please

Is press comment about the Pension fund deficit and changes without members consent anything to worry about (not another Maxwell I hope)?

Is there a Pension fund regulator?

Is the estimated £3.25bn short fall accurate or just the tip of the iceberg?

Should I sell?

Questions re Malta Accounts can anyone tell me:

Is the drop in "other income" anything to worry about?

Is the increase in interest income going to last with european/world interest rates falling?

Why is there a drop in dividend cover?

Is it wise to increase the dividend in a time of such uncertainty?

I do not expect much opportunity for going long at present. Short term formations are mainly bearish, many of them of triangular shape, much like the FTSE. Banks in particular are on the brink of perhaps some sizeable falls and if HSBA goes with the rest then 550-600 could be a first step. But there are probably better targets for shorting. I thought HSBA was holding up better than most, I believe it has outperformed BARC and the banking index over the last six months or so. In fact my interest would be in longer term recovery whenever that may be.

What price points would you say we should watch for for an upward or downward break?

not in this ine at the moment, but have been watching for a while. At these prices, I am tempted, as accounts seem fairly strong. Probably medium to long term to make anyhting more than a few percentage points, though.

The downtrend line from May of last year is very strong with four touches. The price is now however on a line joining the major lows. These two lines form a triangle of sorts albeit with most activity at the upper level. A break through the lower line could fall initially to 640 or so to meet the bottom of the downtrend channel based on the recent peaks in mid-May and mid-August and the low of July (the downspike is ignored in favour of end of day). On Friday there was a white candle, for a potential reversal, but I am not too optimistic.

Energis debacle

What this and other banks must answer - is why they put energis into administration when they had new orders of £41m in the last quarter?

The only answer seems to be - to get rid of the shareholders - the legitimate owners of the business!

Be aware!

teeps, Birdy is rare this time of year. I did not really think hsba could go down while hfx go up, but it has been happening!

Hope Marc returns.

Boron, came across some broker analysis this weekend, think it was Warburgs who have slated Standard and HSBA and have sell notes out on them. A sell note would be a rather rare thing. I understand the reason given was the current situation in Hong Kong where both these banks earn approx 50% of their reported profit. Hong Kong market under pressure due to declining proprerty prices and the likelihood of debt default rising. I assume that alot of loans are secured on property so companies with high gearing ratios and a declining security base could put some players in the the breach of covenant zone.

Was surprised to see the proportion of profits arising from HK for hsba but I guess this might explain the reason for it not tracking Halifax which, I understand, is a pure UK play. I'm short at present on the basis that the stock has sort of completed an H&S pattern - time will tell I guess.
