goodfellas posts show excellent examples of stocks with no resistance, these stocks are breaking out of multi-year trading patterns & hence have formed massive bases to move up from;

good volume action tonyfleming with ARD;

thanks z/sh.
this is now the best thread on the entire free-board

simply because charts cannot be "debated".
they can be ignored or watched.

Take a look at ARD, results due Thursday. Good dividend, lowly rated and a chart breakout on good volume.

I highlighted IMI on one of the other threads, may have been DROP.

It did break out at 290 on increasing volume and has formed a bullish flag.

Some selling today was soon countered and any dip for ex divi will provide a buying opportunity.

This is already my heaviest long position

I also have a 380 target but could see some resistance at 353.

Also recommend Richard Schabacker - "Technical Analysis & Stock Market Profits" which is excellent at making the connection between chart patterns and what volume action needs to be happening to make the patterns reliable

FT/Prentice Hall ISBN 0-273-63095-4, think it was about £35.

millcanned,

The importance of volume on the breakout.

Volume is a gauge of how powerful the buyers are. Stocks can fall of their own weight but to advance it takes plenty of buying power. If volume doesn't pick up significantly on the breakout then the probabilities are for a mediocre winner or worse a false breakout.

Whenever big news is going to be announced such as an imminent takeover then the telltale clue is the volume. In the case of takeovers volume usually builds into an incredible crescendo. This makes sense since more and more people find out about a takeover as it nears completion. The same is true for a marked shift in the fundamentals of the company. The insiders and those closest to the company will be accumulating the stock aggresively hence the volume gives the clue long before any news items are released.

I recommend Stan Weinsteins "Secrets for profiting in bull & bear mkts" for further discussion on volume.

OML also looks interesting - set new year highs on big volume and looks to be forming a pennant prior to another move up...

The volume is there to confirm that it's a "real" move, not the price being pushed around in a "thin" market, in a way that doesn't represent what will happen when the volume kicks in.

For example, if institution X plans to sell 1,000,000 shares tomorrow, but the price goes up on buys of 10,000, which is the more realistic expectation of the future direction - continue up after the 10,000, or plummet after the 1,000,000? On the other hand, if X plans to sell 1,000,000 tomorrow, but there are trades of 10,000,000 today, and the price goes up, there is a reasonable chance that more buyers will be in the market tomorrow to offset the sells

Would have been if I'd caught the break at 290 sham but it slipped off my radar for some reason. Still think there could be a fair bit of mileage in it to 380+ but chart is pretty tricky to read - inverse heads and shoulders and double/treble bottoms all over the place...

Good thread sham. IMI is one I've been watching - only fly in the ointment is it's ex divi tomorrow (9.5p) so could be a pullback before a further move up...

Big volume moving into AIH since the new year high 2 months ago. Settled back at the 150 day ma & looks like its making a pullback low.

I agree Multum. I've been watching SUG very carefully. It has all the winning characteristics but more volume needs to come into the equation to confirm the breakout.
