11/2/2002 14:47 | ruth I am not typing this to cause controversy but the whole point about the bulger killers is they may not have been quite old enough to understand the concept of adult responsability. 11/2/2002 14:24 | Ruth: The Bulger case divides a lot of people but as a parent of 2 boys, I think the vindictiveness and lack of understanding shown towards the Bulger killers was way over the top. They weren't innocent by any means but I think they made a dreadful mistake, something boys of that age and younger do all the time. My eldest boy is 11 today. He still believes in the tooth fairy (really - a few days ago he complained they hadn't come. Didn't think he had to tell Mum or Dad that he'd lost a tooth!) | forwood

11/2/2002 14:11 | no RNS for this so Ill post this anyway LONDON (AFX) - Barclays PLC is on Thursday expected to report year to Dec 31 pretax profit in the range of 3.669-4.08 bln stg, up from 3.496 bln last year, with analysts confident that the bank's credit management skills should position it well to withstand the downturn in credit quality. On releasing its third quarter trading update, Barclays said its annual net provisions charge is expected to be broadly in line with its estimate of 1.1 bln stg reported on June 30. Although the bank's exposure to bankrupt US energy trading group Enron Corp was not specifically mentioned in the update, analysts said it is understood to be included in the 1.1 bln stg figure. Exposure to Argentina was 0.5 bln stg at the end of June 2001, and is likely to have fallen since that date. Overall, analysts said Barclays offers a strong combination of sustainable revenue growth, effective cost control and a firm grip on asset quality. Analysts said they will also be looking for an update on the bank's strategy in terms of expansion. Commerzbank analysts argued that they would support the logic behind an acquisition of Standard Chartered PLC, as there would be synergies from the card business and from selling Barclays Capital products to its corporate customer base as well as the usual head office cost savings. The problem for Barclays shareholders is that there would probably be a lot of competition for Standard Chartered's assets and therefore any predator is likely to have to pay away most of the synergies to win the deal. Earnings per share are forecast to come in at 147-154 pence per share, down from 163.3 pence last year, but the bank is expected to declare a full year dividend of 64-66 pence, up from 58 pence. acb/cmr | pommy
